So this is a new experience for you.

I had a look at them all O:-)

I liked one with the look of a gentleman with black dress and hat (page
5), and another that fluffy one, which I thought to be cute. And as I
actually have a beard, it matches somehow

A possibility… but it would be nicer in the “tittle”, to show there
what each one actually is, not just a post count.

That I usually appear as a “flux capacitor” and Jaeger as a “newcomer”
doesn’t mean a thing. A post from him is way more important than one of
mine.

Nor that I see any of that… As I use thunderbird and nntp to connect,
I don’t see those things.

Oh, I see them now. What do they mean? :-?
Hovering the mouse over any of those things doesn’t give a hint.

I would like to say that in my opinion, it is OK to use your official title within SUSE, in the openSUSE forums, as being part of the SUSE family. I will also say you are welcome here to post anything that fits in with the forum content and would love to get any tidbits of info from the SUSE organization. The more you post, the better your title will become. Trust me, I know that there is only so much time in the day, but your opinions and knowledge of SUSE would be a welcome subject in the openSUSE forums.

Thank You for using openSUSE,

Let me say that I like your avatar selection. While I am sure some will say it is silly, it provides a faster recognition of who is posting a message. One would assume you picked out something that you liked, but for me it helps to know to whom I am speaking and I do not mean that in a bad way either. I might also mention that others here have changed their avatar up, causing some recognition anguish, for lack of a better term. For the older ones in the group, such as myself, I only ask that you find something you like and stick with it. I also like seeing something there over just being blank and with all of the possibilities, surely you can find an avatar that you feel fits you. Any way, I like your selection and thanks for making a choice.

Thank You,

I talked with Kim - I was just surprised that the standard algorithm here sets “newcomer”. You see, I’m really an occasional participant at the forums

The change is fine, thanks,
Andreas

I think it’s some kind of institutional award related to post count. A feature quite common among forums, and presumably easy to implement otherwise it wouldn’t be there. Some might say that it’s similar to the “stars” awarded to infants in kindergarten, but I couldn’t possibly comment on that. You could try and sell them on ebay. On reaching three “feet” you become a god, and then the Administrators try to sell you on ebay, to assist with funding the prefects’ end-of-term party.

People are forgetting that there is this line of dots which represent your reputation just below you post ranking. Ofcourse it doesn’t tell you what kind of repuation a person has

Wow. Stars and stripes (or maybe Hit Points).

We had some discussions about that first title, because “Student Penguin”
is what I think it originally was, but that didn’t reflect well for
someone (such as yourself) with a lot of experience who just hadn’t
posted much here.

Thanks

No, I don’t intend to ever change it, unless someone picks the same one.
I don’t feel like posting my own photo either.

I think student kicks in when you reach 50 posts

Puzzled Penguin 0-49 (new users start with this level)
Student Penguin 50-99
Explorer Penguin 100-249
Busy Penguin 250-499
Parent Penguin 500-999
Wise Penguin 1000-1999
Omniscient Penguin 2000

That might well be. I don’t remember the specific title we replaced, but
the discussion was around the phrasing implying the user didn’t know
anything about Linux, when clearly people who do but don’t post here
would be identified as “new to Linux” incorrectly.

Nice bluff. Although there is a small risk that someone else could choose it for the same reason (i.e. nobody will ever choose that one, so I won’t need to change it).

I see.

Just in case, I want to clarify something: I will not request my title
be manually changed, as that of Andreas was (attempted, because he
displays as “newcomer” now). I do not want the title of an individual
openSUSE member (me) displayed, I want (when/as possible) a solution for
all members. I don’t consider myself that important.

As that is not possible, I’ll stay contented with the current status

Ah, then I’ll have to get the bitmap, edit the colours with gimp, and
upload as image

We weren’t going to make any changes to anyone’s title manually - Andreas
would have been a special case since he’s a well-known developer in the
community, but as I understand it, he opted to go with the default title
rather than a custom title.
