I lost boot option for Opensuse. I am sure it is still installed, only thing I want to know is how to bring the boot option back. I had duel boot option for vista and opensuse now after switching on vista starts by default and I am not having any option for choosing one of them as I had before.
- Boot from PartedMagic or LiveCD
- set the bootflag back on the partition where you installed Grub
- remove “makeactive” from the entry booting Windows in /boot/grub/menu.lst.
- other possibility: install Grub in MBR.
Can we assume you have a limited understanding of this subject? @please_try_again is correct, but you might be scratching your head trying to figure out what he means.
Get this and burn it to a cd

Boot from it, open a RoxTerm and do:
fdisk -l
Post the result for us
If you feel like it and think you can, have a look at this:
Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic
But as suggested, we may need to look at the menu.lst file in SUSE to see if you have makeactive in there.
You may only need to remove the boot flag on the windows partition.
So perhaps if you just get the fdisk info first…
@caf4926
Actually it was just a brief introduction… cause I knew you would provide links which go into details.
You are right I am not in to Linux much. Thanks for your help so far.

I have got this on cd and after booting from cd there was many options but nothing like Rox Term. So it was failed attempt.
After running the live cd and using option 7 Failsafe settings…when I try to write ‘menu’ command instead of writing menu it writes ‘0en4’
It looks like for some reason it changes my keyboards layout.
I would appreciate your help.
Thanks.
Have you tried a normal boot - option #1?
Thanks. I tried option 1 and it worked. I reached up to ROXterm but after that it is the same issue about the keyboard layout.
See this screnshot. I wrote Grub and it is showing ‘Gr4b’. Then I wrote A to Z just to see which letters have changed in keyboard layout.
Hope I can reach there.

At the boot menu
Press F1
Then F3
Read and learn
Then TAB, choose Failsafe boot, then TAB again to edit the menu
I tried changing keyboard layout with your steps but it is still not working for me. Anyways I found my personal files using parted magic which I have copied over so I think the easy option for me is to get rid of screwed up Opensuse drives and Reinstall. Thanks for help.
No problem
Good luck
Hi all…
sorry all, if I got wrong thread or wrong place. But, I got the same problem with skydreams and I have tried caf4926’s suggestion about booting from pmagic. After I got in live desktop, i search the ROXterm from accecories and others. But, I cant found the ROXterm. For more informations, such as :
1). The pmagic version, which I used is version 5.10.
2). I have been reinstalled windows XP, where linux OS, I think, it still there too. Reason : in windows format option, I see 4 partitions (2 partition are known as unknown).
Do you have any suggestion me? Tq.
You need this version of Parted Magic
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/pmagic-4.5.iso
thank you caf4926 for reply me.
Btw, I dont too familiar with linux OS. But, I liked to learn it. Is it same as windows to downgraded version in linux? I meant, I have installed pmagic v5.10. And, if you said I should downgraded it. Should I reinstalled or just input the booting pmagic v4.5 cd only? Tq…
You don’t install it. You burn the .iso to a CD and boot form that
Perhaps you better explain to us more clearly what you are trying to do
Ok…
First time, I have 2 os in my notebook acer aspire 4736. They are Suse linux 11 and Windows XP. (Detail : windows and suse linux Questions from newbie).
Then, because the windows is getting too much virus, I do formated it. After I format the windows, I cant see grub option in the 1st booting like as ussual. (Booting is running directly into windows os). In windows format option, I see 4 partitions with 2 unknown name. I am sure one of it is linux os…
So, my problem is “how to repair the grub option, so I can go into linux OS?”
I have an application that I have installed in linux and I really need the application.
Any good suggestion friends? Tq…
Do as I say, and burn the Parted Magic .iso to a CD, the older version I gave you a link to.
When you are booted with it, open a RoxTerm and get us the result of:
fdisk -l
We need that before we can advise any further.
Ok, I’ll tried it.
Btw, do you have other link? Cause, I got empty link from it. I tried to search from google and many of the links are torrent link with very low speed connection.
Thank you before…
