How to: Benchmark - Opensuse 11.4?

Hey guys

How can I benchmark my system? Or what can I use to measure the performance of the system?

I want to re-compile the kernel for my system and then do the benchmark again to see what the improvement is.

You don’t say what you want to “benchmark”, and against what. There are various Linux benchmarking tools for hardware (such as video and hard disks etc) around which you’ll find easily through Google, but it sounds like you just want to find out what the beneficial effects of compiling the kernel are. Why don’t you ask if anybody’s done that and whether or not it’s worth it? Anyway, check out the Phoronix website and forum, they’re heavily into Linux benchmarking…

Use tool from Phoronix… then compare results to some newer and older configuration and you can get idea where you are at.
However, if you wish to find best performance for your machine, there is no other way than to do many distro installations and doing benchmark on them. That is totally unviable. If your distro (currenly openSUSE, right?) does well, just enjoy.
