how should I partition my drive hmm?

how should I partition my drive hmm?
I have 112.1 GB. I would like to use some and have some left for downloading.

Would you be able to ellaborate a little, please?

The more information provided, the easier and quicker your question can be answered.

Are you looking to partition a drive with OpenSUSE on it?

Are you looking for advice on costom partitioning during installation?

Or are you looking to resize a partition or set of partitions already in use?

Thanks.

If the 112.1 GB is entirely for openSUSE, I would likely partition it in 3 partitions:

  • 1 GB for the swap
  • 20 GB for /
  • 91 GB for /home
The size of the / is really up to you. Of course the larger the / the smaller the /home … a different size from 10GB to 25 GB could be selected instead for / , dependent upon how many 3rd party apps you intend to install, and also dependent upon you desire to have only one desktop or whether you want the capability to boot between multiple desktops (ie gnome and kde and xfce etc … ).

The " /home " is for all your data, and for many of your application and desktop configuration files, emails, email addresses, html bookmarks, etc … . The " / " is for all your executeables, libraries, some very important system config files etc …

The beauty of having a separate " /home " partition, is when it comes time to install openSUSE-11.1 or 11.2 (or what ever new openSUSE) one can do a CLEAN install on " / " but simply tell the installer to keep " /home " and one keeps all their emails, email address, their desktop look/feel, their data, etc … Of course a backup is still always essential.

Ditto to oldcpu here:
but you do need to clearer in your post as to what you want and expect to have.

you can pick up some good advice and ideas from

Before you install SuSE 11.0 read this. If you already installed and it all went
sour, read it BEFORE you reinstall:

and, if new to Linux please read this:

That should do

I like to have /boot partition as 1st partition on drive, sized 256 MB, on Ext2.
I find booting be faster. On my new machine, that may be psychological, but it is core2 duo… on my older Athlon, accelleration is quite significant…

I already have it installed and it is working
