Indeed, not native though. I am learning and love it
Every night backup and dup! ![]()

Some points to consider for painless updates:
- don’t use external repos like packman
- use
kernel-longtermwhen possible - use slowroll when possible
- discard and rollback the update if zypper does not exit cleanly
i had to use packman for vlc codes lol ![]()
No, you don’t. No one needs Packman. FULL STOP.
but why? and how I can use vlc without packman? that is the recommended instalation on opensuse documentation
I find that to be a very limiting attitude … it triggers me
So how do you en-/decode High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) aka H.265?
You could use VLC flatpak version which normally means codecs included too. It’s still an unverified app in Flathub, though for some people it’s not a problem
And that’s the kicker isn’t it? “still an unverified app” … I did discover tonight and saw “Microsoft DBX” included (74 vs 74+1) in the updates … zypper dup … did not include that “update” … kill -9 flatpak …
flatpak
That is logic. dbx updates can only be installed via fwupd (included in Discover) or the motherboard tools provided by the manufacturer.
Trust me … my MB is so uptodate I don’t want some random sketchy software “updating” it … isn’t that how M$ got in trouble?
So zypper was correct and flatpak was not?
There are countless threads about that in the Forums. Assuming that you need HEVC (aka h265) decoding, basically you can either:
- use the Packman repo
- use the Videolan repo
- use the Flatpak version of VLC.
Choose what best fits your needs. Just ensure that you use only the Packman packages you really need, do not “switch everything to the Packman version” to avoid unnecessary trouble.
I’s called “packman essentials” for a reason … not “packman every damn thing”
widowmaker:/home/dart/Downloads # cat /etc/zypp/repos.d/packman-essentials-repo.repo
[packman-essentials-repo]
name=Packman Essentials
enabled=1
autorefresh=1
baseurl=https://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/packman/suse/openSUSE_Tumbleweed/Essentials
type=rpm-md
priority=81
widowmaker:/home/dart/Downloads #
Even “packman essentials” has many “pretty damn things” you don’t really need and should not be installed in a wisely managed system, but as always “your system, your choice”.
Maybe. I do use flatpaks. Celluloid or Firefox, for example. I’m not a Packman user
Really? Because I’m one of the few people around here who doesn’t seem to have a lot of problems even though I do XLibre (not until I get my 9900x3d/32G cl30 ram), SonicDE and Nvidia … hmmm … “Wisely Managed”?
You may want to read up some basic computer knowledge. dbx updates have nothing to do with flatpak or zypper but with secure boot. Don‘t spread nonsense that secure boot dbx updates or tools which perform the update (fwupd or Discover) are „sketchy software“.
Other experienced users made some nice wiki article…
https://en.opensuse.org/UEFI_Secure_Boot:_Microsoft_Certificate_2023_Update
I’ve been “reading up” on “basic computer knowledge” since the early-90’s … when a sketchy bit of software wants to update my MB via flatpak … ya … red flag … maybe you might want to do a “simple search” about that sorta thing
- Flatpak gives you a minimal review in terms of a “security audit”
- “Verified” only identifies the publisher (useless)
- As recently demonstrated by multiple (known) vulnerabilities nothing is safe (sandboxes)
You might as well get apps from AUR or whatever else … I’ll trust zypper thank you very much
As has already been mentioned, the update you saw in Discover is not a flatpak and has nothing to do with flatpaks or flathub.org.
It is an update from https://fwupd.org/. You can use command fwupdmgr update to update manually. May I suggest you check out its man page.
