How many partitions can I have?

I can’t install openSUSE 11.1 (beta4). I have sda1,2,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14 with operating systems on them. The installer doesn’t seem to want me to create sda15 for 11.1 – is there some kind of limit that I have gone over?

I think there’s a limit of 16 partitions due to the SATA driver.

I see, thanks. I’m not at that limit but the disk is SATA. I deleted the last two, sadly, and then it allowed me to install.

Might have been 15, I don’t remember whether it was 2^4 or 2^4-1. And it also applies to PATA due to the common portion of the ATA subsystem. Ironically this is one area where the old PATA driver does better. It was in the 10.3 release notes I believe.

This is when a good boot manager comes in handy! With a tool like Bootit you can create +200 primary partitions. When booting you specify which set of partitions is to be used. Ideal if you test and swap allot.
