How make Huawei E160X work in 10.3?

I am running openSuse 10.3 and have a pre-pay mobile broadband USB device from Vodafone and would like to get it working under this OS. I can’t find any information on how to do this. It is a new device which is marketed by Vodafone as a K3565 but appears to be a Huawei E160X device under the skin. (According to W*****s/XP) At the moment it is the only thing that I cannot get working under openSuse. There is some information at HKL/Funkmodems - openSUSE which I cannot understand which implies that it should be possible. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks. John

Try umtsmon, it worked with my Huawei E220.
Webpin - umtsmon

NetworkManaher 0.7.0 (and above) offers easy setup for USB 3G/UMTS
modems. I use an E160G (Three/Hutchinson) modem with openSUSE 11.0 and I
am very pleased with its performance (after adjusting the 10 min
inactive timeout setting to 30 min)!

You could also try using NetworkManager (0.7.0) in openSUSE 10.3 by
installing it from one of the repos that provide it:
http://packages.opensuse-community.org/index.jsp?distro=openSUSE_103&searchTerm=NetworkManager

Results from
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/system:/networkmanager/openSUSE_10.3
NetworkManager (0.7.0)
Network Link Manager and User Applications
NetworkManager-glib (0.7.0)
Libraries and headers for adding NetworkManager support to applications
that use glib.

Wow, it is very nice!
I heard about it, but couldn’t figure how to configure it.

How do you configure NetworkManager for using 3G modem?
Do you use KDE or Gnome backend or do it manually?

I use knetworkmanager and suspect, that it doesn’t have all backend’s features.
So I think that’s why I didn’t found modem configuration there.

First, one needs to go to Yast2 ---->Network Devices—>Network Settings
---->Global Options —>Network Setup Method and select “User Controlled
with NetworkManager” as the preferred method. Secondly, plug in your USB
3G modem and wait a bit for the system to recognise it, then (Kde3)
right/left click on KnetworkManger icon---->New Connection—>ttyUSB0

connection and increased the baud rate to 460800 from 115000 default),
but you may need to check what your setting requirements are. Gnome is
easier and the auto-configure option works best for me.

NB: Connection needs a couple of clicks for activation after a manual
disconnection, and at other times to run following command as root
(because network service seems to stop running when logging off and
logging back on, when restarting X and resuming from sleep or
hibernation mode): ‘service --full-restart network’

Use Kde3 (KnetworkManger) and Gnome (nm-applet) controls.
I have Gnome and Kde3 packages and one account for each.
NetworkManager is more integrated in Gnome and has more intuitive setup
features there, but Kde3 is OK (it works for me).

I am relatively a Linux novice and more technical answers should be
sought from others.

Have a look at the info at following link (I did install additional
package huawei_umtsmodem, though I am not sure it is necessary):
http://en.opensuse.org/Huawei_UMTS_USB_Stick

…]

Conclusion

It is suggested to install openSUSE 11.0, install additional package
huawei_umtsmodem, and use umtsmon or NetworkManager for connection.

Good Luck!

jmartini,thank you for detailed instructions,
will try it definitely.

Hello seld,

Thank you for the suggestion.

I have loaded umtsmon 0.9.51.20081215 and modeswitch 0.9.5 and it fails to find the device. And so I have run it with a trace and sent the details to the umtsmon development team as they request.

jmartini: Thank you for your response. I will try it when I get a moment.

best wishes

John
