Hi,
The other day, my mother complained about her crappy Windows (I guess she has picked up a virus) and now it seems like that I can convert another person from Windows to openSUSE 12.1 … Apparently she has a DSL modem only and no Router.
So I searched a bit for what to do to get a working connection to the internet via a DSL modem. But I did not find that much about newer versions of openSUSE while google-ing. So this could mean two things:
This is why I wanted to ask: how is it, driver-wise regarding DSL modems? As far as I know, there are two variants of DSL modems: the ones with USB connection (driver needed) and the ones with network-cable connection (should work without a driver). Are there drivers for these modems already in the system? Does anyone know which modems don´t work at all?
In YaST, there is the section “Modem” and I guess I will be able to set it up in a proper way. Any other known issues? Do I need to install some packages from the DVD?
Or is it generally better to put a router in front of the modem? Can I do that easily or are there any obstacles?
would be great to get some answers
cheers
Steffen

Keep in mind that we all use some kind of modem to reach the Internet, whether
we use DSL, cable, or dialup. When someone posts about a modem, 99+ percent of
the time, they are referring to dialup.
In general, DSL modems are supported. In many cases, the only difference between
a cable modem and a DSL variety is the need to log in to make the connection.
You would need to provide the vendor and model of the device to know for sure.
I always prefer some kind of router in front of my modem as that provides the
option of sharing the connection with other computers in the house. In addition,
I have one that is a wireless access point as well. Nearly every consumer-grade
router has the capability of interfacing with a DSL modem that uses an ethernet
connection. Using USB would be problematic.
If you want to test the connection with Linux, I suggest booting a Live CD and
see what it takes to connect.
so it seems to me that putting a router in front of the DSL modem is generally a good idea. I also have a spare one and I will do that. Thank you!
