How I got my Kyocera Ecosys FS-1220MFP working on OpenSuse TW

I am posting a problem i have already solved. As much as i love this multifunction printer, getting it to work on Windows 10, Mint and CachyOS was a nightmare. I spent countless hours for it to finally work. On OpenSuse it was a breeze though.

Because i couldn’t find anything about it in particular, i am posting this here, in case some lost soul finds themselves in my position with a great, old Laser Printer with terrible software.

I want to preface this by saying i am by no means an expert, im sure there are quicker ways or workarounds, this is just the way it worked for me. The guide is pretty low effort and targeted at Newbies such as myself.

So first things first, plug in the printer, and turn it on.

Then, you can go here and download the drivers: https://www.kyoceradocumentsolutions.eu/en/support/downloads.name-L2V1L2VuL21mcC9GUzEyMjBNRlA=.html

You just need the SANE Driver 2.2.1511 and the Kyocera CD Iso Product Library (3.2). (As of 9/2026).

For the Scanner:

  • Navigate to the Sane Driver file, locate kyocera-sane-2.2-1511.x86_64.rpm
  • open the terminal there, using Shift + F4
  • then use the following commands:

1st, to install
sudo rpm -ihv kyocera-sane-2.2-1511.x86_64.rpm

2nd, for some reason, to update. The Readme file instructed to do this maybe.
sudo rpm -Uhv kyocera-sane-2.2-1511.x86_64.rpm

3rd, to check if it installed
rpm -qa | grep kyocera-sane

After restarting your PC it should work!

I tried to scan using “Document Scanner” and “Gscan2pdf” and both worked without problems. I kept Gscan2pdf because it had more editting options.

Now for the printer:

  • Unzip the CD Iso file, you’ll get a - suprise - Isofile, open it with Ark, and Extract the Folder called Linux. There you will find options in multiple languages for 32bit, 64 bit and Global/LOT4, whatever the fück LOT4 means.

  • Once you found the file you need, extract that, now you’ll find a bunch of PPD files, a shell installer, and a rastertokpsl file. The file i used was in Linux/64bit/global/English.tar.gz.

  • open cups: http://localhost:631, and click on Administration. Remember, your username is “root” in Opensuse.

  • Add printer, choose Kyocera FS-1220 MFP, then Continue. Give it a name and description. The next step will ask you about the model, here, you provide a PPD file, browse to the directory of the file you exracted in the previous step and choose Kyocera_FS-1220MFPGDI.ppd then add the printer

  • Next, you need to copy the rastertokpsl file to the correct directory. /usr/lib/cups/filter/
  • Go to the folder with the ppd and rastertokpsl files are. Open Terminal there (shift F4).

  • Then use the following command to copy the file to where it should be.

sudo cp rastertokpsl /usr/lib/cups/filter/

  • Just a note: i ran the Shell file, but it didn’t seem to do anything, i’d run it anyway for good measure.

The printer should then be working.
