I’m installing Apache (it’s winning the contest, so far); I notice that mail (I assume these are alerts of some sort) are sent from Apache to root. But how/when does root see that mail? Surely I don’t have to set up some sort of email account, do I?
Usually you forward root’s mail to the sysadmin’s normal mailbox. Edit /etc/aliases and edit the alias for root to:
root: somebody@somewhere.else
or it could also be a local mailbox
root: somebody
Then restart postfix and it will rehash /etc/aliases to /etc/aliases.db for postfix’s use.

What ken said,
but if you do not have it redirected you can open a console su to root and
run:
you will be able to read the mail in the console.
