Hi everyone. Until now I didnt even know what is Kerry Beagle for, now I see it is kind a search engine or web crawler. I didn’t find much info about it on google, so I wonder if someone knows how it works, is it a web crawler like google and how efficient is it. Maybe some links with more info would be helpfull

For most of us it does not work at all, we remove all beagle. Slows down everything too much. I don’t even use it in FF
Kerry is a KDE front-end for Beagle.
Beagle is desktop search software. If you’ve ever used Google Desktop then you may have experience with this sort of software. It basically makes a index of all your documents, e-mail, IM messages, browser history and other things. The you can search not only by the filename but also by the contents of the files.
Beagle is the indexing software.
Kerry is a KDE GUI that allows you to interact with Beagle.
You can also use a GUI designed for Gnome, the CLI, or a KIO slave with Beagle.

Yeah, it just floods your computer with worthless junk and no valuable functionality. Turn it off and get rid of it… my suggestion as well.
If you’re using Firefox you will notice the idiots have added it as a default add-on. Get rid of it or you will find lots of valuable space wasted very quickly. I don’t know what they were thinking. It is not an efficient program at all.
Let’s say the idea is good. Not for everybody, and not in the state kerry/beagle are in now. If it wouldn’t work like it does now, I would love it for my main machine that has tons of docs, sources, web-content/development files. But it manages to tear performance down to 50%, creating a heavy load on CPU and memory, taking the desktop a long time to load and have it perform in a sluggish way for at least 15 minutes. And everything is affected, performance overall, graphics, stutterin sound.
This from my experience. Yet i do think we need something like it, but light and fast.
Why do they continue to include this in the default installation without having ironed these issues? Sure, you can choose to exclude it, but how many people know or remember to do this? I hate to say it, but in all these years, I haven’t heard one positive comment about Beagle. Is Novell heavily invested in this?
They’re trying to iron out the issues, but need our help as testers. Agreed, it should have been an option to choose, not a default.
If you read my post, you’d see that I’m quite positive on the idea itself. A friend of mine does research through literally millions of text documents, she accepts the contra’s of beagle since beagle completely has become her tool. She does not understand what the rest is complaining about, states there is no other way she could do what she’s doing now.
Novell interested? Yes, they are. But they see openSUSE as a playground. If we would all be reporting about the glory of beagle, they would immeditely include it where ever they could.
I read your post. You seemed to be positive about the concept, not Beagle itself. I am glad to hear there are success stories, though you don’t hear much about this from the general openSUSE community.
