How do you keep your display settings after playing games?

Hi.

I upgraded my system from OpenSuSe 11.1 to 12.1 and, although, overall, I am very pleased, I have noticed one problem.

I’m not really a games person, but in between times, I find myself playing AlephOne and have had no problems whilst playing it in 11.1, but now, in 12.1, after ending the game (in full screen mode), my display settings are completely garbled.

I use dual monitors (VGA -1024x768 - connected to the right of LVDS1 (primary) - 1440x900).

Now, after playing AlephOne (and incidentally Judge Dredd under qtwine which runs excellently :)), upon exiting, my VGA monitor setting is disabled and my LVDS1 monitor is set to 1024x768.

I found that I can go into system settings to reset the display, but when I do, certain applications do not display correctly due to very tiny fonts - mainly file manager, vi etc.

I am at a loss as to how to resolve this issue and am seeking assistance from those who know more than I.

I do recall from before SuSe days that Xenix had a facility to completely reset the display settings to a set configuration, is there a similar facility in 12.1 or is the a way to save the display settings (in a script) before running an application and then restore the saved settings?

I would greatly appreciate any feedback.

You might try updating your GPU driver. Which one are you using at the moment and what is your GPU ?

My gosh - you have me stumped already. GPU? Please tell me how to get the information you desire which I shall post asap.

Thanks

Sorry for the confusion. I guess it stands for Graphical Processing Unit but I’m not sure

This command will show what’s needed :

/sbin/lspci -nnk

Additionally you can post the output of this command :

glxinfo

but I think it’s not needed at this stage of troubleshooting

Thanks for your response.

Ok - the output to the /sbin/lspci -nnk command is:

Your Intel graphics chipset is already using the optimal driver and graphics acceleration is active.

I do recall from before SuSe days that Xenix had a facility to completely reset the display settings to a set configuration, is there a similar facility in 12.1 or is the a way to save the display settings (in a script) before running an application and then restore the saved settings?

You can reconfigure your graphics output on the fly with the xrandr utility, and this can be executed as a command within a script if desired.

I use dual monitors (VGA -1024x768 - connected to the right of LVDS1 (primary) - 1440x900).

You’ll have to experiment a little with the right configuration parameters eg

xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode "1140x900" --output VGA --right-of LVDS1 --mode "1024x768"
man xrandr

will give you the options available.
