How Do You Disable the System Bell for all Applications?

Just for someone who comes to this finding the solution
In KDE 4.6, open Configure Desktop (systemsettings), go to Accessibilty and in the Bell tab, uncheck the “use system bell” option. That solved my problem…

I’ve tried everything listed here short of blacklisting pcspkr as it would appear that pcspkr isn’t being used, I hear the sound coming out of normal speakers, so it isn’t the on board speaker, or so I would assume.

I have no idea what causes it but I checked alsamixer even and muted the beep, but I did have to change the sound card to do that if it matters? I then tried to reproduce the sound with it set on that card, and then switched back to the default ‘sound card’ as it didn’t make a difference. I have all system sounds disabled any where else I could find.

What gives?

the specific answer to your question will depend on what desktop and
version you are using…

if kde go Personal Settings - Configure Desktop > Common Appearance and
Behavior > Application and System Notification > System Bell > clear
“Use system bell”

DD
openSUSE®, the “German Engineered Automobiles” of operating systems!

I did it again, sigh. I always forget to mention my specifics. I’m running Gnome 3, SUSE 12.1, x64.

I did notice this was more so directed towards kde, but since it doesn’t have a kde specific title and no tags regarding kde, I felt it was better to just ask here.

All the same, I have already tried everything else mentioned in this topic.

So, in GNOME 3 (for which I am not the expert here) you can select the speaker in the Top Right Corner and then the Sound Effects Tab where you can select or mute the alert sounds.

By the way, you have several errors in your approach,

  1. You should started your own thread
  2. You should have specified your openSUSE and desktop version
  3. Then specified the problem you have which could be in the thread Title

You are lucky we have a few members that read everything that floats to the top here.

Thank You,

MMk, since nothing seems to be doing the trick, including that which you suggested, I’ll start a new thread.

Well, this is how I solved my problem: I disabled ‘Use system bell’ from Accessibility settings!
