I downloaded the openSUSE 11.0 DVD. I installed it, and it gave me the choice of using KDE 3.5, GNOME, or KDE 4. When it was done installing, I went to the yast installer inside openSUSE and choose to install Wine. It downloaded it to install it.
Now, my question is what is the use of the DVD as opposed to a LiveCD? How can I make it so it gives me the option of loading into various desktop environments? And if the extra size of the DVD is for more programs, how do I install those programs from the disk rather than online?
The DVD is for ease of installation. it installs all packages it can and doesn’t need to get online for it… so if you have a wireless network card that needs tampering before getting a connection this is handy…
if you want to use the DVD as a source for packages rather than the online repository just eneble the DVD in the repository manager
->yast → software → software repositories and disable the others…
But remember… the fresh, new, updated packages are out there and not on your DVD

The regular DVD allows you to install the OS to your disk. The Live CD allows you to try out Opensuse without installing it.

Install KDE3 and Gnome from Yast. After that, you’ll have a selection upon login.

If you have internet repositories enabled, Yast will check if those repositories have more recent versions of the desired software and install over the web. If there is none, Yast will grab the software from the DVD. Try it with one which is definitely up to date on the DVD: Let’s say you install “mc” (Midnight Commander), you’ll notice it accesses the DVD.

Hi
Just add the local iso image via YaST Software software repositories.
Then hit the add button.
Note that updates is a higher priority, so if the package you are
trying to install has been updated, it will download it.
