How do I turn off detection of my softmodem?

Hi

I connect from my laptop to the internet using a broadband usb modem supplied by the ISP.

I have also got an old 56K softmodem in the lappy. Before openSUSE 11.1 the softmodem was not detected. Now in 11.1 it is detected and it is interfering with the good running of the broadband modem supplied by the ISP.

I’ve tried disabling the softmodem in the BIOS. That’s not available in the BIOS settings.

How can I turn the softmodem off in the running operating system so it won’t try to over-ride my broadband modem?

Taking a guess and without one to check with I suspect you’ll have a module like ppp in lsmod that you can blacklist.

Shove a -k on the lspci I reckon it is snd_intel8x0m but I’m extracting this from google.

The -k option reveals snd_intel8x0 and snd_intel8x0m
I blacklisted them but no help. The softmodem still shows up in yast and prevents assigning /dev/ttyUSB1 to the broadband modem (the original manifestation of the problem).

Oh well — … Hmmm and *%#^

Why not edit your broadband dialup script to use whatever device name it ends up with when you plug it in? Or hack the udev rule to assign it to a known device name?

How to disable hardware from detecting and using - openSUSE Forums I found this they seemed to manage it. Only thing I can think of is sound is dragging it in, if it isn’t yast misbehaving with the blacklist config.

Yes, I’d say it’s alsa that detects it, what about AC97 modules? As long as you don’t end up without sound… :slight_smile:

OK I’m getting back on this one. Thanks very much ken_yap – editing the file /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-modem0 to change to /dev/USBtty1 fixed it.
