How do I stop a KDE X-server

Hello. I’m running a pc with dual boot windows7/suse.

I’m trying to install my NVIDIA video driver but keep getting the error message that an X-Server is running. I am assuming that would be my desktop.

How do I stop an X-Server in KDE? I think I know how it is done in Gnome.

take care.

i think you are asking the wrong question: How do I stop an X-Server
in KDE?

because i wonder just exactly how are you trying to install the video
driver when you get that error?

have a look here and see if you maybe find a way that won’t give you
that error, and won’t require you to manually shut down X:

If you don’t have any luck with the NVidia page. You can stop the xserver from a text console.

To get to a text console press CTL+ALT+F1

  • Login as root
  • Stop KDE and the xserver with
rcxdm stop
  • Now try the installer again.

You can restart the server with “rcxdm start” but it may be safer to restart your whole PC.

Even simpler, enter the command ‘init 3’.
