HOW DO I RIP TO MP3 IN BANSHEE

I am relatvely new to linux so bear with me. I am trying to set up my media player (I am using banshee), to play and rip multi formats including mp3, i have looked through alot of posts, and browsed many ewb pages, but have not found a straight forward answer, can some pls help me with a simple step by step howto.

I am sure it will help alot of others to

thanks

This functionality is in K3b (under the Tools menu) as long as you have the appropriate media codecs installed.

So its impossible to rip cd to mp3 from banshee,? (btw im using gnome not kde).
Thanks

Install k3b and k3b-codecs

But there are other rippers for gnome if you insist : asunder or goobox

You are most likely missing the required audio codecs which can’t be shipped with openSUSE due to potential legal issues. My guess would be to install them from the packman repository where they are maintained:

For openSUSE 11.4

 zypper -ar http://packman.inode.at/suse/openSUSE_11.4/Essentials/packman-essentials.repo

Then install the missing codecs…

Thanks all i’ll give it a try

installed k3b and codecs, application icon appeared on desk top but when clicked application does not open

What version of openSUSE?

Post result of

rpm -qa | grep k3b
uname -a
cat /etc/SuSE-release

k3b-codecs-2.0.2-8.pm.13.1.i586
k3b-2.0.2-8.pm.13.1.i586

Linux linux-br2s 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

openSUSE 11.4 (i586)
VERSION = 11.4
CODENAME = Celadon

Thanks here are the results

The application k3b would not normally be added to the desktop, but rather to the menu of applications.

Open a terminal and type: k3b
hit enter

What happens? Post any errors that come in the terminal

This is what i get

k3b: error while loading shared libraries: libkcddb.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Please do this as su -

zypper in libkcddb4

This is what i get when i enter ‘k3b’

k3b: error while loading shared libraries: libkcddb.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

have done that

Please post result of

zypper lr -d

Here it is

OK
It’s very odd.

Not that this is the issue, but you don’t need repo number 7, remove it. (It’s included in repo 2)

I’m in gnome now (but not gnome 3), k3b works fine
Please try doing this:

First of all i tried k3b again, it now opens when icon clicked, however an error popup appearers with ‘MAD MP3 MISSING’ and ‘K3B MAD MP3 plugin’ missing, I then did as you instructed and checked the packman repo, and tried again with the same error box. I searched for the missing files but cant find them.

I have checked back in various threads to see which files i need and i have installed the kb3 codecs and other kb3 files, but i still get the same error message and cannot rip mp3. I ran kb3 from console and get this:

KGlobal::locale::Warning your global KLocale is being recreated with a valid main component instead of a fake component, this usually means you tried to call i18n related functions before your main component was created. You should not do that since it most likely will not work

I suggest then you try either or both of these.
The MAD plugin for k3b is part of k3b-codecs
