I’ve been using openSuse 11 for two weeks, and up until Thursday everything was going rather well…except for an intermitten wireless connection, not being able to play DVD’s, or sync my PDA Smartphone (I tried Kpilot and Jpilot, they didn’t work)…so ultimately just the basics were working.
Which is why I attempted to update and install various network, security, and other software to make Opensuse truly superior to my Windows XP Pro. Which is on a dual-boot partion.
Anyway, I began installing various software; after reading the introduction in the software packages area of the Package Management.
Long story short, I did something(s) wrong, and now my system is really unstable; I’m constantly losing internet access (it was off and on before, now I have to restart every few minutes to regain connection), the icons on ‘start menu’ and tray keep moving and disappearing, plus it no longer shows application tabs for the windows that are open. If I minimize a window, its simply gone. That plus the desktop graphics and icons are disappearing and reappearing for now reason, as well as pixelizing.
So basically its turned into a mess. However I do enjoy how stable it was, so I want to continue using Opensuse, I just need help to get everything working properly again. Should I re-install Opensuse? If so, is there an option to repair the current installation? If not, is there a way to remove what ever I messed up (I didn’t think about using the back-up feature until after this happen so I can’t restore that way).
I’m learning a lot about Linux rather quickly, especially with everyone’s help. Though while in the process of downloading the KDE3base and KDE3Desktop, I did end up losing internet connection again, though now I can’t seem to regain connection. (I’m using a family members Mac at the moment).
Anyway, I initially downloaded the LiveCD, so when I attempted to access that to retrieve the KDE3 applications, I couldn’t. OpenSuse didn’t seem to recognize the ISO image. In which case, how do I retrieve the files I need?
I can use another computer to download them if I need to, it just won’t be a Linux based system.
I located this repository Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_11.0/src it has kdebase3 though would that be equivalent to kde3base? Also, I didn’t see kde3desktop in the list, in which case, would that be in another list.
Small complication, I can’t seem to get online with opensuse now. In which case I need to figure out a way to download the specific files so that I can burn them to CD, to then install onto the system.
I’m trying to download the DVD version of opensuse, however, its already timed-out once. That plus I don’t have a DVD burner, in which case I’m hoping to access the DVD iso through the dual-boot partion once finished.
Though if that doesn’t work, the only option I see, is to somehow download the specific files onto a non-linux system, then transfer to the linux system.
In which case, the new question becomes; are kde3base and KDE3Desktop available as separate downloadable files, for individual’s who can only access the internet from a non-Linux system? As well as those who do not have a DVD burner?
Though if that doesn’t work, the only option I see, is to somehow download the specific files onto a non-linux system, then transfer to the linux system.
That would seem to be your best option. Remember .iso dvd image files are large and cannot be stored on a vfat file system as is. You can get round that by extracting it to a .dir
Though it’s more likely in XP you are ntfs. So - assuming you can access it from Suse, you will be fine. Then use Yast software repositories and add the .iso or .dir
