How do I make Firefox faster?

I am running Firefox 3.5.8 and I would like it to be faster. It was faster in Ubuntu 9.10.

What can I do to make it faster?

Thanks.

Go here TweakGuides.com - Firefox Tweak Guide and go crazy. Also If you don’t use ipv6, turn it off. Go to Yast>Network Settings>Global Options and uncheck “enable ipv6”. Then in firefox, go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced>General> and uncheck “use smooth scrolling”. Then open the about:config preferences and change network.dns.disableipv6 to true. Reboot, and you should notice a big difference.

Switch to Chrome. :wink:

Unfortunately Chrome doesn’t have all the features so one has to use FF sometimes.

When I went to Yast to uncheck “enable ipv6” is said:

Warning

Network Settings is currently controlled by NetworkManager and it’s settings cannot be edited in Yast.

To edit Settings use NetworkManager connection editor, or switch the network setup method to Traditional method with ifup.

but I unchecked “enable ipv6” in Yast anyways, and it seems to have kept the setting. But how can I be sure?

And does smooth scrolling have anything to do with ipv6? Because I would rather use smooth scrolling.

Thanks.

Yea… it sure boogies alright. :stuck_out_tongue:

I look forward to the features being added as time moves along… I would certainly like to change the font size on the “Bookmarks Bar”, but oh well, I have a magnifying glass in the desk drawer. lol!

Can someone please respond to this?

Thank you very much.

Warning tells who controls network settings . However network manager restarts when u click finish . BTW there is a good how-to in unreviewed section

Ok, so does that mean unchecking the “enable ipv6” box must have worked even though there was a warning message?

Kernel update killed my net - openSUSE Forums

Please just tell me what is the script I type in terminal to see if ipv6 is still running.

Thank you very much.

If ifconfig results show an inet6 entry like this

inet6 addr: fe80::20f:1fff:fe89:8fd5/64 Scope:Link

then ipv6 is currently enabled.

I have this line when I run ifconfig:

inet6 addr: fe80::21f:c6ff:fe28:cc0b/64 Scope:Link

So I am guessing that ipv6 is still running.

Can someone please give me easy beginner instructions on how disable ipv6?

Thanks.

You can only truly disable ipv6 in 11.2 by adding this to the boot arguments:

ipv6.disable=1

Ok, it was a complicated process but I finally disabled ipv6. Thanks you everyone for your help. I appreciate it.

Firefox is definitely faster now.

Funny, I never bother tweaking it and it’s super quick as it is.
Happy to hear it’s better for you though!:wink:

do anything that reduces the load on your system or firefox, like:

-turn off desktop effects
-pick a plain, non-3D, all square corners firefox skin
-same for desktop theme
-run XFCE/LXDE or other ‘light’ desktop environment (instead of KDE4)
-disable all firefox add-ons
-turn off java script and cookies
-uninstall all browser helpers, like Flash, Adobe, Java, etc
-setup firefox to run faster by unchecking/disabling:
–Keep my history for …
–Remember what i enter in forms and the search bar
–Remeber what i’ve downloaded
–Accept cookies from sites
–Warn me when sites try to install add-ons
–Tell me if the site i’m visiting is a suspected attack site
–Tell me if the site i’m visiting is a suspected forgery
–Remember passwords for sites
–Use a master password
–Use autoscrolling
–Use smooth scrolling
–Check my spelling as i type
–automatically check for updates to installed add-ons
–automatically check for updates to search engins

or if you wanna keep all of those resource consumers, then:

-buy faster CPU(s)
-buy faster hard drive(s)
-buy more/faster RAM
-buy faster GPUed video board, with more fast video memory
-switch from wireless to wired (and, get a faster in/out pipe to the
internet in everyway possible, like disable IPv6, seek and use a
faster DNS, set a better MTU, etc)

Yes. It always works for me. The NetworkManager does not have an option for ipv6, so you can disable it through
YaST -> Network Settings.

I believe the warning about NetworkManager pertains to whatever is configurable through NetworkManager, is not configurable through
YaST -> Network Settings.

Thus, the ipv6 setting is not included for that warning.

And it will not for most users of 11.2.

Reason, see link I posted before.
