how do I make an application default ?

I downloaded ktorrent and I want to make it the default application but it doesn’t show up on the " open with" when I am going to download the bit torrent file.
I click on other and try to browse for the application but I haven’t found it.

On my machine :

fda@linux-q8pt:~> which ktorrent
/opt/kde3/bin/ktorrent

It could be the same on yours

For KDE,

  1. Right click on a file.
  2. Open With → Other
  3. Select the application which you want to be the default. Or type its full path.
  4. Now just check “Remember application association for this type of file”

That easy!

Thank you Peeps I will try those

and how do i do so on Gnome?

Right click on file –> Properties –> Open With tab –> select an application you want to be the default.
