How do I install OpenSuse 12.1 in Win 8

Bought the wife a Compaq laptop with Win8 pre-installed. It’s causing her (and me) much grief.

I need to install 12.3 x 64, but the DvD doesn’t auto-start when put into the reader in the box.

Presumably I need to get into the Boot sequence and re-set the box to boot from the CD-Rom drive, before the HDD.

However I remember reading that Win 8 has a secure boot system and would like to check my presumption before I start tampering.

PS - how does one get into the Boot BIOS on a Compaq - trying to find any details is truly impossible in that appallingly opaque OS.

Hi
Worked on a Compaq CQ56 the other day, Windows 8 secure mode enabled…

It should be F9 for the boot menu, F10 for the BIOS menu.

I’m running Win 7 and openSuSE 12.3 on my desktop and Win 7 will not update. After getting my google on, I came across a few links saying that because Win7 is not the boot loader it won’t update.
Good luck with Win 8

I have a laptop with Win 7 and openSUSE 11.4 and 12.3, and Win 7
certainly updates. And Win 7 is not the boot loader.

Search again

Same here, I have 1 laptop running openSUSE 12.3, WinXP, Win7 and Win7 updates fine. Just the desktop fails when trying to update to Win7 SP1. I give up on the desktop and will one day just get 7 running virtually on openSUSE.

To install the SP, you need the MBR to be standard, not grub, and the W7
partition to be marked bootable. You can make those changes, install the
SP, then revert the changes.

In my case, MBR is generic, I only need to change the boot flag temporarily.

Your title of the thread “http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/install-boot-login/490589-how-do-i-install-opensuse-12-1-win-8-a.html#post2586555”, which refers to 12.1, doesn’t match the text of your 1st posting in that very thread.

There doesn’t seem to be a single reference of the version 12.1 of openSUSE within the text of that 1st post, but within the text of that 1st post
there is a reference to 12.3 instead.

To anticipate a few things: openSUSE 12.1 for sure wasn’t capable to deal with Windows 8 and/or secure boot,
because version 12.1 of openSUSE is too old for that.

Talking about version 12.3 of openSUSE is another thing - but what did you mean at the end of the day?

Good luck
Mike

Also you boot the dvd it does not auto-run from a running Windows instance.

ie boot DVD in and boot the machine. Note you may need to select what to boot with F12 at boot to select the device.
You should adjust partitions sizes inside of Windows to allow space to install openSUSE.
Secure boot will be set on by default in the UEMI bios so you need to be sure you use grub-efi and tick the secure boot box.

If you plan to wipe Win8 and not dual boot you may need to manually select how you set up the partitions.

Hello chasfgr,

Can we get an update on this thread. :nerd:
