How do I install Nvidia in openSUSE 13.1

Hello!!

How do I install “Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT” in openSUSE 13.1?

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G94 [GeForce 9600 GT] (rev a1)

Thank you so much!!

Hi,

Have a look here : http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/502180-openSUSE-13-2-and-GTX-970

https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers

No.
That’s totally irrelevant here.
A GeForce 9600 GT is not even similar to a GTX 970.
The 9600 is years old, and should be perfectly supported by either the G02 and the G03 driver.

The latest driver that is advised in that thread would not even work with a 9600 GT, nvidia dropped support for them (and much newer cards as well) in the 343.xx driver series.

In openSUSE 12.3 I installed the G03 driver.

“sudo zypper in -f nvidia-gfxG03-kmp-desktop”, but now I’m running openSUSE13.1.

The same driver is available for 13.1 as well.

Add the repo (in YaST->Software Repositories->Add->Community Repositories) and install it the same way as you did in 12.3, or use YaST to install it.
If you still have the old repo, you should remove it first though, and add the correct one for 13.1.

If in doubt, please post your repo list.

zypper lr -d

You do not have the nvidia repo, so add it like I wrote already, and then install the driver with YaST or zypper.
You’ll need those 5 packages (if you’re using kernel-desktop, run “uname -a” to check):
nvidia-gfxG03-kmp-desktop, nvidia-uvm-gfxG03-kmp-desktop, x11-video-nvidiaG03, nvidia-glG03, nvidia-computeG03
Selecting the first one would probably automatically select the rest as well, but I’m not sure.

You could also just use the 1-click install on the page I mentioned instead (this will add the repo and install the driver), but personally I’d prefer to select the packages by hand. (automatisms can go wrong under certain circumstances…)

rhus@linux-plzk:~> uname -a
Linux linux-plzk 3.11.10-21-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jul 21 15:28:46 UTC 2014 (9a9565d) x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Ok.
Then add the repo, and install exactly those packages that I listed.

Nvidia driver works fine.
Thank you very much!
