How do I install a webcam

Hi,
I’m a total Newbie and I wondered how I go about installing a very basic HP webcam on Suse 10.3 64bit.
Thanks
g

What model is it? Exactly.

HP calls just calls it a “Basic Starter Webcam”. That’s all the driver (for XP) says, too. It’s only VGA.

There is a package called uvcvideo, I believe it’s listed as uvcvideo-default.

You can check if your webcam is supported here:
Linux UVC driver & tools
I saw some mention of it a few HP webcams there. Once the drivers are working it should work with programs like Skype.

Good luck.

I might seem a bit thick, but what do I do now? I installed the package, but can’t find a mentioning of a webcam anywhere.
I’ve been with Suse for barely 2 weeks, so please bear with me…
thanks

just fire up something like KDE-tv,xawtv,kopete ( if they’re installed ) then click on settings in either.Kopete would be best as it has a devices section, where you can see if the camera is working

There is also a how to guide here for web cams under opensuse:
HCL/Web Cameras - openSUSE

I prefer to test my webcam with the applications wxcam and camorama, but many users will test their web cam with kopete or amsn.

Packman is a good place to look for packaged applications for devices such as webcams:

You have to find out first which driver it uses …

lsusb

or

hwinfo --usb

shows maybe more information.

With newer cams you might have luck and it’s an uvc device, just search for
uvc in the YaST software module and install it. For 10.3 you will find all
kind of webcam drivers here:

For testing i recommend motv, for more fun cheese

There is no such thing as a very basic webcam.
There is no common standard for webcams, unfortunately.

Start with identfying the model/make, using lsusb.

Thanks everyone for you help. I swapped my “basic webcam” for a Creative Live Cam and with the aid of some online tutorials managed to get it up and running.
Thanks

Hi, I have a genius webcam and it runs with the gspcav driver, so u may want to install that and check if it works.

After installing with yast u can check if it works easily, install an app called “cheese” and see if the cam works.

Hey, boy.
You can check your windows Drivers in the C:\Windows\Drivers
and get the exactly name of your webcam
and then search Google
And You can try cmd “#lsusb” in the terminal of Your SuSE, find out the usb webcam

HP and SONY OEM Laptop usually use the Ricoh r5u870 webcam.
You can find the latest driver here

If you get successed, thx to wiki.mediati.org.
