How do I harden OpenSuSE 64 bit Tumbleweed and how secure is it to other operating systems?

I read the current OpenSuSE 12.2 64 bit Security guide and I installed AIDE as a result. The rest of the guide did not seem to contain useful information for my particular needs except for the encryption section in which I already use full-disk encryption using dm-crypt and LUKS for my external hard disk drives and my solid state drives along with my Super Speed USB 3.0 thumb drive.

How do I harden OpenSuSE 64 bit Tumbleweed GNU/Linux?

What do you do to harden and lock down your OpenSuSE and which version do you use?

How secure is OpenSuSE 64 bit compared to other GNU/Linux distributions like Ubuntu? How secure is it to other operating systems including Microsoft Windows 8 Pro 64 bi or OpenBSD 5.2 64 bit?

I did multiple searches for answers, but I am getting a wide variety of scattered search hits. Iā€™d like a single thread to address these questions.

What other questions should I be asking regarding security at the operating system and software application levels?
