How do I get Java to work?

I am brand new to Linux and am unable to get my Java to work. It apparently is installed but is not working properly. My OS is Linux 2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop i686, system is openSUSE 11.2 (i586), and KDE is 4.3.1 (KDE 4.3.1) “release 6”.

I use Firefox 3.5.7.

Also, where would I extract the new version of Firefox to?

Thank you in advance for any help!

Can you describe what’s happening to make you think that Java is not working?

Sure! When I go onto the game site pogo.com, it requires java to open the games. It does pop up and says its loading but then after a substantial amount of time I get redirected to a page that says: Java Not Found or Not Working. It also may load up but then freeze. How would I go into the system to fix this? Thanks for your reply!

Go into yast and remove all java packages with jdk or openjdk…and install the packages from sun java-1_6_0-sun, java-1_6_0-sun-alsa, java-1_6_0-sun-jdbc, java-1_6_0-sun-plugin and java-1_6_0-sun-src. I had the same problem as you did the above and pogo works great now. Hope this helps you.

Dwight

Indeed the removal of openjdk is a good suggestion, its not all that good of a replacement of java… yet.
