How do I get ethernet to work in the "thunderbolt" port on my Lenovo X1 Carbon?

The X1 (4th gen) has a thunderbolt port which I believe they call “Mini DisplayPort™”. I was able to plug in a mac thunderbolt to monitor display adapter and it worked instantly. But when I plugged a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter, it didn’t work. I tried running:

sudo dhclient eth0

But that didn’t work. (That did work for a USB ethernet though)

What do i need to do to get it to work with openSUSE?

openSUSE LEAP
KDE
Kernel 4.7

Run

dmesg -w

in a terminal window, plug in the ethernet adapter and see what dmesg reports.

Note that a mini displayport and a Thunderbolt port, while using the same
connector, are different technologies. If the Lenovo doesn’t have a
Thunderbolt adapter specifically, then you can only use the DisplayPort
functionality to connect a display.

The specs say it’s a mini displayport and not a Thunderbolt port, so
chances are, it doesn’t have the support for connecting Ethernet through
the port.
