How do I get an on-screen caps-lock telltale at login and elswhere?

Sorry! I did a search on variations of Caps Lock and got no returns. Ergo, the post here. I use a keyboard that doesn’t have any lights, so an on-screen indicator for when the Caps Lock key is set would be most helpful to me.

More info required: openSUSE version and desktop environment relevant here.

In KDE4 you have a couple of widgets that show the caps and numlock status in the notification area (one with text, the other with icons). I suppose there’s something like that in Gnome too. Don’t know about LXDE and others.

OOPS! v13.2 w/ Gnome desktop

https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/36/lock-keys/ (not tried myslef).

Thanks for the link. Turned out a PITA :frowning: Had to figure out how to get JAVA installed before I could get the extension. lock-Keys is apparently now installed but when I check the “Installed extensions” page, a red eror icon shows up on the left of the listing for Lock-Keys. No explainations.
I’ve been trying to switch to opensuse for 10 years now. Little has changed in usability. It’s simply too expensive to use. The time I spend trying to get “falling of a log” simple things like a Caps Lock indicator working or getting a printer installed or getting the samba client to see a WD NAS is worth more than the cost of Windoze. I keep hoping and I keep trying but…

Thanks anyway.

I just tried it and it works just fine. Installed directly from above link. I would be very surprised if it needed Java - GNOME Shell extensions are written in JavaScript. How exactly did you install it?

When I went to the page there was a pink and red banner that said the page couldn’t detect gnome desktop - check troubleshooting - did so - said needed java - installed JAVA RPM x64 from JAVA site - used install dialog in file manager - no message indicating success or failure - googled opensuse & JAVA- found out about included but not installed java plugin - installed - went back to gnome extensions page - banner was gone - clicked on icon on the left to install - seemed to install - went to installed extensions page - Locked-keys extension showed as only extension installed but with red error icon on the left - no bread crumbs to follow.:frowning:

The Web page needed Java not the app.

As far as I know it needs GNOME Shell Integration plugin; I am not aware of Java requirements.

Sorry, but, this is supposed to be helpful to my original quest in what way?

You asked how to display state of NumLock. GNOME Shell extension does it.

When I went to the page there was a pink and red banner that said the
page couldn’t detect gnome desktop - check troubleshooting - did so -
said needed java - installed JAVA RPM x64 from JAVA site - used install
dialog in file manager - no message indicating success or failure -
googled opensuse & JAVA- found out about included but not installed java
plugin - installed - went back to gnome extensions page - banner was
gone - clicked on icon on the left to install - seemed to install - went
to installed extensions page - Locked-keys extension showed as only
extension installed but with red error icon on the left - no bread
crumbs to follow.:frowning:

Hi
In firefox is the GNOME Shell Integration plugin present? When visiting
the extension page the first time you get that, you don’t need the java
from the website, java openjdk plugin off the install medium
should suffice…?

Is this a standard openSUSE 13.2 or did you do some sort of custom
install?

If you press alt+F2 and enter lg <press return key> looking glass
should start, then on the right select Extension, then on the Lock Keys
line press ‘Show Errors’ anything there?

  1. Present - now activated - now “installed extensions” page sows no error for Lock-keys
  2. standard 13.2 x64
  3. no errors. was a bit of a mystery figuring out how to close the 'lg" window. fiddled around and Esc key worked.
  4. on reboot telltale was present in login box

I was expecting to see an lock-keys applet or icon similar to what was displayed on the gnome extensions page. I’m guessing There is some graphical means of controling lock-keys. Just don’t know where to look for it.
At any rate, you have been most helpful!!

I was replying to your post about your not being aware of the gnome extensions page requirement for JAVA. ( I see I should have clicke on “reply to post”) Please see the troubleshooting page for that requirement. You will see that it is as I stated. If it was not needed, why would Gnome suggest it was. Your statement above is as useless to me as the previous one.
But thank you for the attempt.

Hi
I wonder if it’s a lib missing, is libindicator3-7 installed, I also
have libappindicator3-1 and typelib-1_0-Appindicator3-0_1 installed.

Sorry about 'esc’aping looking glass  If you press alt+F2 and enter r
<press enter> this will restart the shell as well, no need to logout
etc…

Guys, let’s not make this personal. If you find something being offered

Could you provide a link to troubleshooting page? On GNOME extensions web site I see:

I’m using GNOME 3. Why can’t I install extensions?

If you are using GNOME 3.4 or newer and installation still doesn’t work, check to make sure that the “GNOME Shell Integration” plugin is installed and enabled in your browser preferences.

Where is Java requirement for GNOME Shell extensions stated?

Every answer always seems to create a host of other questions:)

  1. So how would I check for missing lib(s)?
  2. Is it standard to not present any indication of installation success / failure?
  3. Is there a way to reveal the install process as it occurs
(in looking glass or other tool) and would that prove success / failure?
  4. If there is a gui control for the extension, where should it show up?
  5. Thanks for the shell tip! Is there a way to know when a restart, log-out
or reboot is appropriate (and which)?

Sorry, it wasn’t my intent to be “personal” or in any way denegrate.

In ancient times I was a volunteer sysop on a Compuserve support forum for Windows NT.
In that venue we all wanted to know when our “support” missed the mark. When we missed
the “mark” it was generally because we failed to recognize the level of expertise of
the person asking for help. Or, we didn’t take the time to digest the information and questions in the
request for help.

All that said, what should I infer from your directive to “move on”? If it is not appropriate here to let
someone know when thier efforts at support weren’t helpful, I will of course refrain from any comment.
If comments on the matter are appropriate, could you educate me as to how I might respond w/o ruffling feathers
and yet be short, concise and to the point?
