Basically what i want to do is encrypt my entire home folder or at least make a new private folder where everything is encrypted. Previously i had tried to use truecrypt but it didnt work well on opensuse 11.2. Anyone here have issues with truecrypt with opensuse 11.2?
Have you tried the Yast partitioner? It’s possible to create an encrypted partition there. Be very careful and back up your data if you go this route.
Had a look at yast partitioner and it seems a bit complicated to say the least. Am now trying again to use truecrypt to make a private folder encryoted with 256bit aes. I made the container with a empty openoffice word document. Now am putting some files inside to see it it works.
One thing though, when i tried to access the files directly by clicking on the empty word document without using truecrypt and without the password, the computer just froze for 2 minutes and the window just closed itself. Is this what normally happens when you tried to access the files directly without truecrypt?
I haven’t used TC in a while, but I do recall there being issues opening OOo documents in Nautilus. I just used the quick starter instead. Which DE do you have?

Well i can still use openoffice when the folder is mounted and not mounted. When issues did Ooo have with nautilus-how would this affect my desktop?
I ask which desktop you are using because it was in Gnome/Nautilus that I used to have problems. It didn’t freeze the system, but OOo simply would not open the docs. The workaround was to open them from the quick launcher. Give that a try and see if it doesn’t help.
What version of opensuse were you using that you had problems with?
Im using opensuse 11.2 with gnome installed.I dont seem to have the problems you described-i can read, write and make/edit/delete word documents with the truecrypt folder mounted/unmounted. Perhaps there was a update released at some point?
I must have misread you, I understood you to say you were having problems opening documents on your TC partition. It doesn’t sound like you have anything to worry about.
Yes openoffice works fine with this TC partition.
However when i try to access the TC partition directly by clicking on it (and not having the TC interface open or entering the TC password needed) the file just freezes the screen for a bit. I know that in order to access the data i have to mount the TC partition with the TC interface and password but i just wanted to see what would happen if i tried to open the files ‘manually’ as it were. Evidently it slows the system, then closes itself off. Strange. But the files were inaccessible i hope.
