How do I create a desktop icon for KDE 4.*7* ?

I looked here: http://forums.opensuse.org/pre-release-beta/385473-how-create-shortcut-kde4-desktop.html
but it doesn’t work for current KDE. Google didn’t get me to anything more recent. Anyway, there is no “icon” applet any more, so there must be a new (non-obvious) technique for adding icons to your desktop and I did not guess the right Google search to locate the information. Yes, I find this irritating. Sorry. Thank you!

it is a FIVE year old thread! strengthen your google fu and find:

  • Google doesn’t care that much about thread age.
  • I don’t think it should require Googling at all, though that is a KDE issue.
  • It should not be necessary to read KDE docs, even KDE quick start docs,
every time there’s a new release. “should not” being a key part of that
    sentence.
  • the answer is to get to “desktop settings” and change the thing to “folder view”.
(“right click on root/desktop” does not always work…)
