How can i upgrade a non-working openSUSE 11.2 to 11.3?

Hello,

on my desktop pc i have openSUSE 11.2 installed but this os as screwed up…
for example: the mouse’s left button not reacting at all not in GNOME nor KDE.

so i fought to upgrade to 11.3 but my question is how can i do it without losing my data and settings…

i have there a TexLive working environment and i dont sure i will able to do it again on new installation.

thank you!

If the /home from 11.2 is on a separate partition, keep the old /home (mount it as the new /home) but this time create NEW user names in 11.3, and do NOT use the old user names. Then after booting, you will still have the old /home/olduser directories, from which you can copy the data.

Settings is another matter. If both Gnome and KDE are borked then you may not be able to recover them without specifically solving your mouse problem.

The DVD version has an upgrade option. It uses the packages on the DVD to upgrade to the next release. I’m not sure if will fix the mouse problem though.

It might.

It might, because xorg.conf is not used, and I’m guessing this is a global setting or driver problem.

At worst, the system will be as broken as was the previous one. Assuming it boots ok, of course.

Thanks you guys, i have the dvd so i will try to do the upgrade, hope it will solve this issue.

if not how can i backup all my data? just copy the /home folder?

Yep…

When doing the new install you can tell the installer NOT to format the partition that is used as home but just mount it as /home. This will preserve your personal data and settings. But you should always backup just in case something goes wrong.
