How can I update gnome 2.30 to gnome 3 ?

Guys… Help me… I want to update gnome 2.30 to gnome 3…

Using openSuSE 11.3 x64

How can I do that ?

Because I use KDE. Upgrading for KDE is easy.

But for gnome i do not know. Anyway read this Archive:GNOME 2.30 - openSUSE
As in Kde you must find repositories.

I thought 11.4 comes with Gnome 3 Shell Preview…

It does, you just need to install gnome-shell.

I have install gnome shell, and nothing happen! How do I enable the gnome shell for default!! On boot

Select the “GNOME3 Preview” on GDM before login.

Yes!! Thanks you. That did the trick.!! I did not see that option cause I left the Auto Login option on installation. So that screen never shows up! But now everything is how I like it. And I’m loving the new GNOME 3. Thanks for heads up! :stuck_out_tongue:

You’ve not really given us any information about how you’ve installed
it. Are you using the preview release that’s included in the 11.4
release, or are you trying to get the (apparently as yet not working)
GNOME3 repository working?

I just search in the Software Manager - YaST for the word gnome-shell, and there it was, so I just selected for install. And voila GNOME 3 running. I think this is it; just like in the previous post indicate me, to select the “GNOME 3 preview” from the list of the login screen.

And that is how I did it.

That would be the preview version, then - not the “final” one (that
really isn’t final yet) that everyone seems to be having problems with.

People are having problems because the repository is being populated and it’s not yet ready for release… I suppose some people saw some packages there and started preaching the word.

My advice is for people to wait a bit more for the official release, that’s when things will work

I’m running the final, from the opensuse repo and I have to say , not bad. for a start. It can only get better.
Cheese still does not work for me. The app. crash’s, same as Gnome 2, I will have to look into that.
I wasn’t able to update my system yesterday, it would not pickup the 64 bit app’s, It wanted to change everything to 32 bit app’s.
But it worked tonight.
I used yast to update, easier for me to keep an eye on things.

I was holding my breath, I was thinking it would hose my system. Upon completion , I lost like log out and shut down.
I managed to logout, but that did not do the trick, Had to reboot to get Gnome 3 to work.
There is no Gnome 3 on the log on page, Just Gnome.

First thing I did is load the shall, From the opensuse Gnome 3 repo. Then I open the repo in yast and switch to everything in that repo.
I had some some deficiencies , There was a few I deleted, no choice. Most gave a choice to delete app’s or to delete opensuse patterns or something like that.
If it gave me a choice that is what I deleted. patterns opensuse.
I have and am using KDE and I have the Nvidia from the opensuse repo.
Now I need to log on to KDE to see if it still works.

Yes, I would agree with that, Nelson - playing with this stuff is
something that if someone wants to do, they should do on a test box and
they should be capable enough with Linux to work through any issues they
have more or less ‘on their own’ (of course, others in that boat may well
be able to help each other - but the devs are focused on getting things
populated and so aren’t looking for bug reports since the repo’s not
fully ready yet).
