I tried to open /root/file.cp using gedit and it will not open, does not recognize character encoding.
Is there another way for me to view the file?
Thanks
opensuse 10.4, gnome

The file may be binary, which would mean you cannot use gedit. What is it doing in /root anyway?
And :D, this openSUSE 10.4, where did you get that ?
It is a tcpdump file. The command I was using is “tcpdump -i eth0 -w /root/file.cp” I was trying to figure out how to access the dump file after exiting tcpdump.
I mean 11.4. Haven’t used this computer in awhile.

‘vi’ is always an option. ‘less’ for reading works as well (both from
the command line). I like ‘gedit’ a lot, but it kinda stinks at
recognizing character sets or locales or whatever and I often find that
‘kedit’ works better in many of these cases (I have KDE stuff installed
because I like using some of them in Gnome, like konsole and k3b for
example).
Good luck.

Use wireshark. Also, typically the extension .cap will make things
easier for you. The file is binary (a LAN trace or capture file) and so
gedit is not for you. Wireshark forever.
Good luck.
