Hotmail & Linux problems?

I know, I know, I shouldn’t be using Hotmail at all, but I have some old contacts that I would lose if I stopped using it (please don’t try to convert me).

Recently Microsoft completely changed Hotmail and it no longer works with any browser under openSUSE.

I have tried Firefox 3.0.3, Konqueror, and Seamonkey.

Firefox works under Windows Vista by the way, so I don’t think it’s a Firefox problem.

What happens is that the site works perfectly, but when I try to compose a new email, or reply to one, I cannot enter text in the main body box.

I can enter the address and subject, but the main text part it greyed out and I can’t even get a cursor in there.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi
So why not add the account to kmail and use that?

Yeah, I had a friend who could not use any browser under Ubuntu either. So the problem’s not specific to OpenSUSE. Hotmail just seems to dislike anything other than IE. There were some postings in various forums suggesting things like revert to old Hotmail look-and-feel, etc. No idea if they succeeded.

My friend’s solution was to move to gmail.

Good luck.

I don’t have the problem you describe Growbag

I still get this stupid message
‘If you don’t want to upgrade right now you can still continue to Windows Live Hotmail, but some parts of it may not work and it may not be displayed properly.’

Opera works no problem though.

M$ - Bunch of losers

Your choice:

  1. Loose contact with those with M$ rings in their nose and unable to receive
    internet standards compliant mail.

or

  1. Put money into Bill and Steve’s pockets every time you use hotmail (they get
    paid by selling those ads).

I use Hotmail infrequently (for much the same reason as the OP). As suggested above, I just click on the link provided and use existing web interface with no problem. Sure, its not elegant, but it works.

Hi.
I’m not trying to convert anybody, but to me, the Hotmail threats (about it being no longer supported by Outlook Express), along with the Vista DRM threats were instrumental in making me migrate to liGNUx for good.
And yes, leaving Hotmail (or “Blackmail”, as I call it lovingly) behind was harder than leaving Windows – but it just had to be done. Now I’m even thankful to those Redmond thugs, they gave me just the right push.

hmm, Opera works!

Thanks for that suggestion caf4926.

I’m guessing it’s a problem with the Linux version of Firefox (and all Mozilla derivatives), seeing as it works with the windows version.

I guess they will release a patch in due time, but Opera is quite nice looking and it has “tab” functionality, maybe I’ll just use that as my default browser from now on.

Yeah. It’s a nice browser and a little quicker I feel than FF, though slightly less features in the way of extensions, but still very configurable.

my misses starting having the same problem with not being able to type text into hotmail message box a few weeks back, but mine was still working… all of a sudden, My hotmail interface automatically upgraded today and NOW I CAN’T TYPE INTO THE MESSAGE BOX!!!
C’mon… This is not a Linux version of Firefox problem… This is a Microsoft Screwing over Linux Users Problem! ARgghhh. Do they seriously think Linux users will switch back to Windblows just because they can block us from using Hotmail??? Bah.

It is very Annoying, because I use Msn Messenger (amsn)
and i occasionally send emails to certain contacts with hotmail and now i can’t!

This is not the first time Microsoft has screwed us over…
I signed up for Gmail a few months back and wasn’t able to send Emails to People Using Hotmail!!! Hotmail automatically blocks emails that come from Gmail! and put it in the trash can!

sure you can fix that within hotmail and make sure the sender does not get blocked from their inbox, but what are we suppose to do??? send an email from a totally different Email client and warn the person your trying to email to mark your address as safe! Or use a **** windows partition just for using Hotmail!

this is beyond a joke! First they (microsoft) block gmail addresses from hotmail… And NOW… they stop linux users from sending emails using firefox/hotmail…

Is anybody out there using Linux/Firefox that have the upgraded version of hotmail still able to type text in the box??? anybody???

bah to microsoft. It just makes me hate them more! It doesn’t make me want to go back to Windblows!

And to think… Novell are in partnership with these guys…
hmmmm. I will leave it there…
Hate Microsoft… Love OpenSuse… but what is one to do?
maybe I will give Opera a shot.

I too am having the same problem so tell me how to add the account to Kmail or should I just forward each email to another account>:)

You can still send from Hotmail using IE under Crossover Linux. I just tried it, and it still works for now.

I’ve just sent them a message via their feedback link. Maybe, they’ll fix it before Christmas. (Yes, I still believe in Santa Claus…)

I know that isn’t any help for people that want to continue using hotmail, but what I did was forwarded my messages to gmail (pick whatever other email you want use), send a message to all contacts informing them of the new email address.
Now that MS is screwing with hotmail again, I’ve decided to just closed my Hotmail account.
I advise everyone to leave hotmail!

It also works completely with IE4Linux you can find it here:
Main Page - IEs4Linux
Only drawback is that it is a little slow I may end my hotmail account I don’t do much with it anyway.

IE4Linux
Ick…

As if Hotmail isn’t enough.

I just can’t fine enough desire for Hotmail that it would make me want to install IE4Linux.

As far as I’m concerned Bill and his cronies can go blow a goat.

You can’t. They don’t allow POP for non-paying users.

I’ve gotten the new hotmail to work (not well, but it does work) in Opera and Firefox but only by doing this:

  • In Firefox, go to about:config and change UserAgent from “SUSE” to Firefox.

  • In Opera, go to “Manage Site Preferences” under content, and add one for “live.com” and under the Network tab, choose “Identify as Firefox”

It will work. Not perfectly (and when doing a new message, you’ll get the “thinking” cursor forever, you MUST hit the “X” stop button to stop the browser loading or you can’t type in a message), but if it’s necessary, you can do it.

My 82-year old mother reported the same problem about a month ago with her HotMail account when they forced that new hotmail update on her. I tried seamonkey, and it has the same problem. I already had IEs4Linux on her Linux desktop (as an icon she could click) so she ended up using that for her Hotmail, but IEs4Linux has its own share of problems related to Internet Explorer simply being old.

That work around is interesting to know. I’ll give it a try, but I’m not sure if the work around will be user-friendly enough for my mother.

Ok it does work I changed the general.useragent.vendor to Firefox from SUSE. It even eliminates that “Upgrade you browser” annoyance. But I have a problem the change in about:config doesn’t stick after Fx restart. What am I missing here?

I found out my problem turns out the Fx addon UserAgentSwitcher is what kept putting it back to SUSE after Modifying It to Firefox.
