Hotkeys don't work in KDE applications

I have opensuse 12.1 tumbleweed, KDE 4.7.4.

Can you please help me with one bug I’m struggling with now. All hotkeys with Ctrl (+C, +V,+X, +F etc) don’t work in KDE applications anymore, like Dolphin or kwrite.
They still do in Firefox and other non-KDE apps and they, surprisingly work in KDE find toolbars (try Find… in kwrite and then ctrl+c or ctrl+v inside the toolbar).

Is it some setting I have mischecked or is it a KDE/xorg/… bug?

thumbleweed code problem

Perhaps not! The OP seems to be running Jumbleweed, and I don’t see a forum for that. :slight_smile:

Tumbleweed has KDE 4.7.2 as per 12.1, whereas the OP stated KDE 4.7.4, so it doesn’t appear to be a tumbleweed problem until 4.7.4 appears in the tumbleweed repo.

I think the OP made the best choice of forum, based on hitting the largest number of KDE users.

Probably yes, because in order to fix this problem I added latest KDE repo having already tumbleweed hoping that it would fix this.
Moreover, tumbleweed has some git libs and nothing more :frowning:

i wonder what percentage of folks who ‘upgrade’ to fix a problem find
that in the end many mix-mashes of code which is UNTESTED running
together, causes more problems than they fix…

i would not have a clue where to begin to unravel this mix of Jumbleweed…

on the other hand, if you were to back level to a pure 12.1 without
any “upgrades” (only allow the ‘updates’ to flow: enable only oss,
non-oss, packman and update repos…see http://tinyurl.com/33qc9vu)

then, if you still have the hotkey problem, POST your problem in these
forums, and see if someone has an idea of how to work around it…

if it is not just a setup problem, then post your bug (instead of
assuming someone else had the same bug, posted it, and the devs fixed it
in the next release of KDE…)

I have done all you have said: I deleted all tumbleweed and additional repos and now I have only original 12.1 repos. Then I switched all libs to these repos. The problem persists. What should I do now? :frowning:

  1. use YaST > Security and Users > User and Group Management to add a
    new test user, then log out and back in as the new user…does that
    solve the problem? if so, someone can tell you the next step (or i can
    if i see it first)

  2. can you/have you tried a different keyboard? you should try (it might
    be a hardware issue–it might just be dirty contacts between the
    keyboard and computer…unplug and replug, might fix it…)

  3. if yours is a laptop, have you experimented with the Fn key to see if
    maybe using it will restore the functionality?

  4. it might be worthwhile to check and see if there is a BIOS update for
    your computer/motherboard/laptop…

  5. you said the keys don’t work in KDE apps anymore–which means they
    did once? what changed? (move from 11.4 to 12.1? update? kernel change?
    infusion of software from Factory, unstable, playground or non-standard
    KDE repos? power surge? forced shutdown? what? )

  6. if, when you get to the first green screen during boot you press F5
    and select to boot using systemv (not the default systemd) does the
    problem go away?

  7. if you boot Failsafe do the keys works as expected?

  8. is this a system running in a VM? or accessed via a network?

assuming you have neither poisioned the system with conflicting software
or visited Personal Settings - Configure Desktop > Common Appearance and
Behavior > Shortcuts and Gestures and changed stuff in a harmful way (i
do NOT understand that section so i can’t help you either fix or
un-break it there), then i guess you must have a bug…and when you
report it to bugzilla i suppose it will be tended to in due course…

  5. I can’t say what changed. I have just installed xneur (with russian and latvian layouts) and made capslock as changing layouts button. That’s all.

After posting here 292877 – Hotkeys don't work in KDE applications, in other apps they do seems that the bug was fixed:
Suddenly, updating kdelibs4 and kdelibs4-core to 4.8.0-2.3 did help and
resolved the issue. Hooray!

Other KDE libs that might have fixed this had these minor opensuse repository
versions 358.1, 325.8, 282.2, 229.2, 194.2…
