I have been able to install and load Opensuse 10.3 up to a point, that point being what appears to be the desktop. At start up the boot screen with options comes up OK and then a green screen with an option to press escape for more information and then a black screen with white printing running up. After this it stops at a screen with alternating dark green and light green horizontal lines interspersed with a small amount of white. Keyboard response is flickering movement on the screen.
Can anybody help with this problem?.
Computer specs are…
Intel4 with 3 gb cpu
2 gb ram
Leadtek Winfast Nvidia Gforce 6600 LE video card 256 mb
3 internal harddrives, Windows XP on the first, Open suse 10.3 on a partition on the second and Ubuntu 7.10 on the third which works OK.
Thanks for your reply. I have selected Failsafe Mode and after the black screen with white printing loads with no error I have…
Welcome to openSUSE 10.3 (i586) kernel 2.6.22.5-31-default (tty1).
next line…
linux-aaly login: _
When I login I get…
Last login: shows time and date and “on tty1”
Have a lot of fun… doug@linux.aaly:~> _
When I let opensuse load as normal it goes OK to the “press escape for more information” screens. If I don’t press escape the green screen changes to all black when the white line is halfway completed and a grey screen appears and then changes to the green screen with horizontal the lines. If I press the escape key I get the black screen with white printing moving up the screen. The printing moves up very fast so is hard to read. The last thing I can read is “loading starting firewall initialisation…” but there are more lines before the screen changes to all black, grey and then the green screen with horizontal lines.
It looks like that something wrong with building the screen .IT could be that the configuration of the monitor or graphic carf is not oke.
On the CD OR DVD of suse is repair mode try to run this .
If it do not works .
Boot in the failsafe mode .
Login as root
startup yast2
Check you,re hardware in particular you,re Graphic card and monitor
With driver did you use for the graphic card
the one install by suse or ?
What kind of monitor did you use
dobby9, from your reply I have discovered a couple of things to try but without success. I booted in Text Mode, Vesa Mode and 800x600 Mode but they made no difference, problem still exists. I then tried Repair Mode and a blue screen came up with a red box and the message “An error occurred during the installation”. I was able to verify that the DVD is Ok and a “Show Loaded Drivers” option showed that the “Realtek RTL 8139” (graphic card) was loaded. The screen problem was not repaired.
I booted into Failsafe mode and started yast2. When I selected Graphics Card and Monitor these was a pause and then the screen became unreadable, this time with vertical lines. I was able to select and read all the other options OK. The Hardware Information/Display option listed
the graphics card.
I did not load a graphics driver so I presume that a driver installed by suse is being used. My monitor is a
Diamond Digital DV1772FD/DV1772FDB 17 inch CRT.
One thing puzzled me in you,re first post is stated that you,re Graphic is Nvidia Gforce
6600LE
But in you,re last post you said that the REaltek driver is loaded. To my knowledge REALTEK and NVIDIA are different
My Craphic card is NVidia 6200 and I use the
Nvidia driver
Most important with the CRT monitor is that
refresh rate should not be higher 65 HZ
So if I am right try to change the driver and check the refresh rate
From what I can work out my graphic card is made by Leadtek,
type WinFast 3D Graphics Series and is supplied with the Nvidia Gforce 6600LE driver. The install cd has only Windows drivers.
When I booted to Repair Install System I found the entry Realtek RTL8139 listed in Main Menu/Kernel Modules (Hardware Drivers)/Show Loaded Drivers.
Ubuntu 10.3 loaded and is running Ok and I did not have to load any Linux drivers.
The monitor refresh rate is 60HZ.
I don’t know how to change the driver when I can’t access the desktop or what new driver to use so I will search the internet to find out about these things and post the results in this thread.

You may also want to try adding the boot option vga=normal or vga=0x317
at the Boot Menu screen (GRUB). Just move the arrow key to stop the
default boot, then add the above.

Success, I now have a desktop. Thank you all who replied. I referred to monitor manual as suggested and was able to set my monitor to 85 HZ refresh rate and the correct vertical and horizontal frequencies but along with trying the other ideas and links I still could not access the desktop. An internet search lead to the solution in a message on this forum posted in January by “anitos insektus insurektus” titled “Unable To Start Graphical Environment (KDE)”. It was to enter “sax2 -r -m 0=vesa” at the prompt in Failsafe mode.
