Home Media Server

I am working on expanding my home network to include a media center PC running Kodi and a media server for all of my movies, music, and pictures. What is the preferred server OS to run on my server?

I do this on a Raspberry Pi 2 using OpenELEC, personally.

Jim,
I have thought about setting up a Raspberry Pi, but how do you have enough storage on a Raspberry Pi for your media? As far as Kodi is concerned I plan on using as Raspberry Pi as my media center. What I am asking is what is the best network storage for my media? I have thought about a simple NAS or a server hosting all of my media. The most important part is keeping the device and OS open source. Thank you for replying to my post.

External USB hard drive (4 TB), plus I use UMS from my desktop for media
that’s stored there.

I store my data, as mentioned, on an external hard drive and use a remote
media server - you can also use NFS (I’ve done that), but I find having
UMS makes for a much simpler configuration.

The remote media server that you mentioned. Are you using a Raspberry Pi or another device?

That’s just my regular desktop, which has a bunch of storage attached to
it. UMS doesn’t play content locally on that system, it’s just a UPnP
media server that serves content to the local network.

That is how I currently where my media is stored I am not running UMS. Thank you for the advice, it will make my network changes a lot simpler. I had not heard of UMS but now I will research this and install it on my desktop.

You bet. It’s a fork of the PS3 Media Server (PMS), which I’d been using
before - the latter hadn’t been updated in a while, and I find UMS works
really nicely.
