Hiding Applications That Are Not On The Current Virtual Desktop

I am unable to select an option that just shows the applications designated to a current desktop and hides the rest. After all these years, I do not even know why KDE does not have this set by default.

My system is openSUSE 11.3 64-bit with KDE 4.4.4

If it helps, I installed my system through the openSUSE 11.3 LiveCD.

The following are images of my Multiple Desktops and Pager Windows respectively.

Thank you for your help.

I’m not too sure I understand you correctly. But that feature may not be available to you unless you upgrade kde

from KDE 4.5.x onwards this option is available. (i thought it had been
available in 4.4 already, but i don’t remember clearly; accordg. to your
screenshot, it isn’t.)

KDE considers 4.5 it’s stable release; many bugs and also functionality
has been fixed from 4.4 -> 4.5.

some people advise to stick to KDE 4.4, but i found 4.5 more stable &
alround better than 4.4. several other users agree with this. it’s up to
you of course; leaving the security of your basic install does bear some
risks. for some, problems with graphic drivers, per example, surfaced with
KDE 4.5.

i’d recommend switching to KDE 4.5 – BUT ONLY if you’re comfortable with
the process of switching repos via YAST or zypper, and able to install a
new kernel or video driver if the need arises. if not, you’ll have to wait
until openSUSE 11.4 is released…

Okay, thank you for your help. Why would KDE even have this option as the default? What would be the purpose of multiple desktops if one could not show only the applications currently on that desktop?

it was the default in KDE3, when they “improved” it to KDE4, they
lost that capability for a couple of years or so…

progress is not always smooth or beneficial–especially when the focus
becomes how it looks, rather than how well it works . . .

Um… hiding what kind of applications (widgets? windows?) where (desktop? pager?). I think the request still is sort of unclear here.

DenverD, just in case you read this: your post is not of much help. KDE4 focussing on blingbling is the typical criticism of people who haven’t given it a closer look. Actually effects and the like are a minor focus of the KDE-team these days. You might want to take a look →here to get an idea about the multitude of concepts which are developed. Just a hint, okay?

Hiding applications in the Task Manager*, can be done by setting up the Task Manager to show only applications from the current desktop. I.e. right-click on the Task Manager, then select “Task Manager Settings,” and then look around, there should be a few checkboxes along the lines of “Only show Tasks so-and-so”

  • The Task Manager is that widget that shows which windows are open and so on; it is generally the widget that takes up most of the space on the default panel.

I think the checkbox is “Only show tasks from the current desktop”

the op posted a screenshot of his task manager settings, which didn’t
include these options. i thought they were there in KDE 4.4, but it’s a
long time ago that i used that and can’t remember exactly. i also set my
task manager to only show tasks of the current desktop, and i’ve been
doing that for longer than 4.4. for some reason the op’s settings don’t
seem to include these options though. don’t understand this, but am not
going to downgrade to 4.4 in order to find out.

Not quite right. The second screenshot in the op shows the settings for the pager, and not task manager.

That’s exactly the option that came to my mind at first, but yet we can not be sure what funtion the OP is actually looking for (unless I miss something here).

Thank you for all of your help. I upgraded to KDE 4.5, but I still do not see this option to only show applications on a particular desktop. I removed the Pager and put it back in, but nothing has changed. I even tried searching for it via the Internet, YaST, and the Plasma widgets, but I could not download it from any of those sources. By the way, my pager version is 1.0. Do any of you have further suggestions regarding this matter?

Task manager configuration is where it should be.

gogalthorp, what do you mean by “taskbar configuration”? Do you mean the panel? Panel settings does not allow me to set the setting of hiding applications not on the current desktop, and my pager options are just the same in KDE 4.5 as they were for KDE 4.4.4. What is the version of your Pager plasmoid?

Okay I fixed this. Thank you for all your help. Just do as gogalthorp said by right clicking one of the applications on the Task Manager, clicking Task Manager Settings, then ensure that “Only show tasks from the current desktop” is checked.

Please mark this thread as solved.

No, I do not believe it ever was the default in KDE3. I recall having to change this every time I installed KDE3. I also STILL use a KDE3 system at work, and it is not the default in that system.

Glad to read you were provided the solution. For those curious, on a KDE-4.4.4 here is what the dialog/selection box looks like:

Its the TaskBar configuration
Uncheck the box with “Show windows from all desktop”

…and you get there by right-clicking anywhere on the taskbar → task
manager settings.

Hmm… I selected that option (my selection options are exactly the same with the given window). It looks like my system ignores those completely… What should I do?
