Hey guys I’m John and I’m new to linux in general, I would consider myself very computer savy, I know alot of lingo, but can’t program or anything like that. Just trying to make some friends. just some people I can chat with and get my noob problems and questions resolved. Thanks, hope to here from some of you guys soon.
Hey John. Welcome to the forums.
Where are you from – I’m from Oz? Best and biggest continent on the planet.
Have you used Linux before or just microsoft or where are you at with computers?
We’ll certainly look after you with any newb questions you have so be sure to fire away in the technical sections/forums whenever you’re ready.
Well hi!
I’m not even computer savy
Glad you made it to openSUSE, the prettiest distribution around (IMHO). When you come across problems, there are loads of ways to try and find solutions:
the openSUSE wiki,
the openSUSE mailing lists,
all the ways listed here, including of course, these awesome forums.
A few pointers for you: Kwin/Compiz Fusion make for awesome 3D graphics. Also, installing software in openSUSE is very different from Windows. This article is VERY useful, give it a good read. Another of my favourite places on the internet is openSUSE Community, where (among other things) lots of patent-encumbered software lives.
So: yeah. Welcome, enjoy, get involved!

Hey John, welcome to openSuse.
Welcome to Opensuse!
Indeed - Welcome.
One word of advice. Patience.
It’s all too easy to throw the towel in at the first ‘My blah blah isn’t working’.
Stick with it and learn the ropes. You’ll never regret it.
> Hey, I was thinking about making a new opensuse distribution.
what do you have in mind to offer in your new distribution based on
openSUSE?
i know there are several folks wising someone would rub the brand off
of SLED/S (a la CentOS) and then offer update support for (say) half
the price that Novell does…
is that what you have in mind? there IS money along that path.
