Help with user logon

Just installed SUSE 11.1 with KDE, no games on an existing Windows machine. I believe all went well, but I haven’t tried other than SUSE for the past few days.

That having been said I am having a problem (I think) when I first log on to the box. SUSE will only let me in as root. I have created another user and granted root priveledges to that user and set automatic logon for that user.

The on boot Log on screen shows the user in that little green box, but when I try to log on as that user the log on sequence seems to loop:
input user name and pass → screen goes black → log on screen prompts for uid and pass.

When I enter “root” on the on boot Log on screen I pass right through to the desktop.

Anyone have suggestions before I try a repair or reinstall.

Try the following steps:

  1. Log in as root and log in to the desktop
  2. Select Computer → Yast
  3. Select System → /etc/sysconfig Editor
  4. From left hand column choose Desktop → Display Manager → DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN
  5. On the right hand side under Setting of: DISPLAYMANAGER_AUTOLOGIN , type in the username
  6. Click on the OK buttons

Log out and reboot your computer. Now, the username you assigned will now have autologin.

Good Luck!

Romanator,
Thank you for your help. I tried your tip but still ended up having to do a new install to fix the on boot log in problem.

I think I must have fat fingered my initial set-up when it tried to partition my existing disk space. That went much smoother the second time around.

Any way, thanks again, Dude.

NO NO NO NO!!!

never log into KDE, GNOME or any other Linux GUI as root…ever.

I second this strongly. Read: SDB:Login as root - openSUSE

Although you shouldn’t ever use the root account login regularly or even frequently, once in a while it is easier or even necessary to log in as root. Especially when something breaks!

NOT in the GUI!!! You have not read the link I provided above (or you are stubborn about it).

NEVER EVER LOG INTO A LINUX GUI AS ROOT, instead do as Henk and
everyone else who know what they are talking about and log into KDE,
GNOME or whatever as a REGULAR user and THEN become root as explained
in http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Login_as_root

believe me, you can not even imagine the ways you can KILL your Linux
install without even trying…even if you only log in as root ONCE…

happened to me when i didn’t know any better…do NOT log in to a
Linux GUI as root trying to fix something…usually things get WORSE
when you try.

I agree. What was I thinking?? He couldn’t autologin as regular user.
