Hi,
I have a problem that when rebooting my desktop hangs quite frequently, my guess is that it is KDE since there is no problems in runlevel 3.
If I reboot 2-5 times it comes up nicely so it is a bit random and when it works it continues to work until I reboot (a week later or so).
I have tried to just switch from init 3 to init 5 back and forth but that does not seem to work.
How do I go about troubleshooting this?
What log files would be the interesting ones to read etc?
I’m running 12.3 64 bit and only use KDE even if I have Gnome installed and it is updated to the latest edition since one of my main tools is Evolution.
Might change to Gnome but I really like KDE better.
That sounds like a possible hardware problem.
Do you get to the login screen? If auto=login try setting it to login
What video hardware do you have and what drivers?
For some reason I do have auto login, will set it to login and see what happens.
When you mention hardware it springs to mind that I have a Hauppenauge TV card (that I don’t use) that I in the passed diabled in some way. It might be good to physically remove it.

So, do I understand you correctly?
Sometimes on boot KDE doesn’t start, other times it starts and you don’t have any problems?
Well, this could be related to plymouth.
Please try to uninstall it or add “plymouth.enable=0” to your boot options and see if the problem persists.

It always starts, but sometimes it just hangs and never completes the start, such as no start sound, some icons missing or even the whole taskbar missing, it is also extremely slow in those cases.
Will certainly give disabling plymoth a try.

No audio could be caused by plymouth, see Access Denied .
Those permission problems could of course also cause other issues, like non-working direct rendering (which probably would slow things down).
But this could also be a different problem.
I would guess either kded, plasma or kactivitymanagerd is hanging.
Do you have any network mounted drives or networks services enabled which are not always reachable at startup?
You could try to disable all kded services in “Configure Desktop”->“Startup and Shutdown”->“Service Manager” (the lower list, “Startup Services”). If the problem disappears, it must be one of those.
And try to rename /usr/bin/kactivitymanagerd, to see if that is the culprit.
Have you tried to create a new user and see if it happens there as well?
And another thought:
Maybe nepomuk is indexing and slows down everything.
Try to disable that as well. (in “Configure Desktop”->“Desktop Search”)
And have a look with “top” or KDE’s activity monitor (press Ctrl+ESC) if some running process slows down your system.
Great suggestions,
I will go through them one by one next time I’m off work. Yep it’s my work computer and it runs a few virtual servers/clients so I don’t reboot that often.
Thanks
Another thing just came to my mind:
I have read reports of KMix’s PulseAudio support causing hangs on startup. (I don’t use PulseAudio myself)
So you could also try to disable PulseAudio in YaST->Hardware->Sound. Just click on “Other…” in the lower-right corner and select “PulseAudio Configuration”.
