Using Thunderbird I have archived the messages using the archive tools by year and month. I have then exported the Archives directory from Thunderbird using ImportExportTools NG and saved them on another drive as what I understand to be MBox files but are shown as .sbd directories.
When I open one of these directories I get a set of files by year with an icon I do not recognise but in properties is shown as a mailbox file.
If I left click on one of these files Thunderbird opens a the Write window. If I right click and ‘open with’ I am offered choices with Kmail view as first option and if accepted it eventually opens the first message in the file and allows me to open the next one in turn using a next message button.
I cannot understand what is happening and why Kmail opens a view but T’Bird opens a write window.
Rather than set up and use KMail as a client how can I arrange T’Bird to work in the “view” mode.
Please forgive if my terminology is wrong. Been trying to sort out and store off line many GB of email and getting tired!
"Import/Export" menu the item "Export folder with subfolders (with structure)" and you'll have a file, with the folder name, and a directory, with the folder name plus ".sbd".
To import, choose from the import dialog the item "Import one or more mbox files, with its/their subdirectory" and select just the mbox file;
Hi Malcolm,
The method you suggest is clearly the first choice. The issue is being able to view archived emails on another drive/system without necessarily having the existing email client available. For reasons I do not understand KMail view opens perfectly but I had hoped a similar experience could be enjoyed with T’Bird. Will try and explain further later but having some issues with IMAP server at present. Trouble has been working with too many messages (possibly over 100,000).
Please could I put this on hold for bit. My problems are still with managing my emails and downloading. I have had serious problems which, following discussions with my ISP, have concluded that there is a bug within the ISP server and RoundCube application on their system. Until this has been sorted out I am not touching my system as I have 20-30 GB of emails and the opportunity for a loss of data has increased significantly at my end. More later.
