help with internet censorship

hi!
i am in Iran and im running opensuse 11.2 on my laptop. we have wireless internet which is great.
BUT
this means that i have a really annoying government internet filter(similar to what they have in china) to get around which blocks sites that it thinks people shouldn’t be looking at.
(facebook, youtube, etc. are blocked).
i have tried every single proxy site and firefox add-on i could think of but they are all blocked too.
i was wondering if there was some sort of handy application or something else to deal with this. any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!
jahan.

well dont ask any anti stuff (for good reason or whatever).

Being in a restricted zone, your ISP is probably set to block certain sites just like in china. In a lot of countries any attempt to circumvent government ordered block can lead to serious trouble.

well the thing is here most people use a windows program called drweb which they run off a usb stick.
unfortunately wine doesnt like it so im kinda stuck.

are you aware of http://nedanet.org/ ?

do you understand anyone who has enough technical capability and
access to your communications stream as to be able to block access to
facebook, youtube, etc automatically has means to know how to find
you, where you are…right now…

i believe you are taking a great personal risk posting open text
messages like the one you did…write down nedanet.org and walk away…

the thing is the filters probably sit between you and the proxy sites…

thats right. the filter is between me and the proxy sites.
so clicking on your link only brings me to the government filter site again. I do understand the risk as does everyone here in regards to bypassing filters, but
so many people do it that the government doesnt waste resources trying to find people who are trying to bypass. there aren’t police breaking down doors and arresting people for using proxy sites if that it what you are imagining.

someone did mention vpn, but its terribly confusing to configure. anything else that could help?

Setup your own proxy at home (or lease a virtual server somewhere for
cheap) and then use SSH to proxy through it (don’t forget to also proxy
DNS… Firefox has an option to make this work now I believe).

I do not necessarily believe police breaking down doors is the concern.
If your organization is blocking sites there is likely not a law behind
that, but an organizational rule with a result of employment termination
may be something you learn about soon. Less-dramatic, still a bummer.

Good luck.
