Help with fstab, permitions USB disk

Hello, I have used couple of years ago suse 9.0., then I switched for various reasons to wins and now I started to think about linux again.
I have opensuse 11.1, with some grips I have installed nvidia graphics. (One click didnt worked.)

Now it goes further - I have usb 1tb verbatim disc (ufortunatelly plugged on old USB 1 - since the machine is older and rebuilt) and I have another internal HD with VFAT partition.

Now - I had huge problems to actually mount the usb - everything I found on web failed. I have then updated all usb related packages in yast and I was able to get to it. Once.

I fear I have fiddled with fstab too much, because the permitions for my discs changed and now I cannot write on them.
I cannot mount that USB anymore either.

Now, I m really open to give this thing a try, but after 3 days of frustration I m begining to think if there is anything that work from box and its easy to set up.

Here is my fstab:

/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST380215A_9QZ092C1-part2 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST380215A_9QZ092C1-part3 / ext2 acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST380215A_9QZ092C1-part1 /boot ext2 acl,user_xattr 1 2
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST380215A_9QZ092C1-part5 /home ext3 defaults 1 2
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3120022A_5JT0K6GN-part5 /local vfat user,users,gid=users,fmask=113,dmask=002,utf8=true 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/usb-Hitachi_HDT721010SLA360_1605000c7161-0:0-part1 /media/disk. vfat user,users,gid=users,fmask=113,dmask=002,utf8=true 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0
debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0

Can anybody help me? I need to have write permisions for “local” and be able to mount that usb drive. To say least, skype didnt worked either, until much fidling, which made microphone work.

I m quite dissapointed.

Thanks for help.

Partly you’re causing the trouble yourself. The disk will not like the USB-1…and it may not only cause trouble with the disk, but eat resources as well.
Change:

/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3120022A_5JT0K6GN-part5 /local vfat user,users,gid=users,fmask=113,dmask=002,utf8=true 0 0

to:

/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3120022A_5JT0K6GN-part5 /local vfat defaults 0 0

How old is the machine? How much memory? CPU? NVidia card?
What I mean is, most motherboards less than 8 years old have at least 1 USB-2 connection. This arises some doubt whether the system meets the 11.1 requirements.

Maybe you should take a look at the XFCE desktop, or LXDE (from the repos).

I have 2,5 GB RAM and Athlon running 1660 Mhz nominal.
That USB disk worked fine under windows, hence my assumption it will too. It might only take while to mount, but then it must work.

I m buying pci card with usb 2.0, I just dont have money for new pc, this one gets gradually upgraded as much as it is possible.

Thank you for the help, I change it and see what it does.

I’m a touch concerned when you write “after applyinug all USB related updates”.

11.1 on first release had a lot of issues, so you should use “Online Update” to get benefit of a year fixing and stabilising the release, before starting to ‘tinker’.

Hopefully you applied USB updates with something like Software Manager, did you get the latest kernel to?

You should very much prefer advice on the openSUSE website, especially if it’s detailed enough to list the 11.1 version.

For me USB drive access has just worked, and more conveniently than handled by XP or Vista (Win 7 is now approaching it).

I am sure once you have an ‘up to date’ system, it’ll be possible to verify the packages involved.

Under Desktop Environment, you ought not need to do mount and unmount yourself, it should just pop-up with an auto-start.
