Help w/install needed.. Bad Graphics, no Wireless, slow 3d.

Before I start complaining, I’d like to say that I tried several flavors of linux on this generic laptop (Infoclick - Model 755118 (I think its really a mecer laptop )) without any success, and I was very happy to be able to get OpenSUSE 11.0 on here. It was pretty easy, actually, but it didn’t install perfectly, and, as this is my first OpenSUSE install, I’m going to need some help sorting these issues out.

So, What went wrong? Well, for one thing, the graphics system came up weird. It seemed to be an 800x600 screen on a 1024x768 display, with the right side of the 800x600 screen stretched out to the 1024x768 display, so that anything that was beyond the 800 was just streaky lines. I got rid of that little glitch by telling Grub to use vga=0x317 instead of vga=0x314, which didn’t really fix anything. It just looks fixed, but if I try to change my resolution, things really mess up, and I have to reboot to get back to my pretty but somewhat limiting 1024x768. I’ve tried to make changes to xorg to get this working, but they don’t seem to make any difference whatsoever. The resolutions don’t even show up as options, only 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480. Where are the rest of them? Are they being overridden by the grub vga option?

Another problem with the graphics is the 3d, which seems to sort of work, but its slow. Slower than my downstairs PC, which is only a PII with an old NVIDIA GEFORCE 2 (or is it three, doesn’t matter). I would think that this P4 laptop that supports #D would be lots faster (I’d like to play through Sauerbraten on it. (Three cheers for the makers of the Cube 3d Engine… awesome.)) I expect that both of these issues are due to the graphics and/or monitor not being detected properly, but I don’t know how to fix either of them. ( I have tried, with limited success)

As for the wireless, all I have to say is, what Wireless? I wouldn’t have bought this lappy if it didn’t have wireless, which I still think it does, but I can’t seem to find it. It’s like its not even there, not anywhere. Either that or I’m just not seeing it. I would be happy (read as annoyed) to have to use a windows driver with ndiswrapper, but I can’t even identify the wireless to know what driver to use, so I’m chained to my ethernet cable for the moment, which really really sucks, but, at least I’m online, and overall, I’m happy with my new lappy.

Hmm… what will you need to help me? My grub menu…

How about my Hardware info… (lshw)

Ummm… lshw doesn’t seem to work. Do I need a path in OpenSUSE? is it a different command? Do you need to see it?

My “expertise” is in wireless, so I’ll let someone else help you with your
graphics setup; however, there is no wireless device in your lspci output. There
is a possibility that you have an internal USB device that would only be seen by
using the ‘lsusb’ command. That one is not automatically installed - it requires
the usbutils package.

Note: Many laptops with Cardbus bridges do not have an internal wireless device,
but use a PCMCIA plugin.

Once you get your graphics working, you should enter questions about wireless in
the wireless forum, but be aware that many more wireless devices work with
openSUSE 11.1 than with 11.0.

Larry

I do not see anything in there that looks like a wireless controller…perhaps it is disabled in the BIOS?

I went to the infoclick website (ca fait une longe tempes qui j’ai pratique mon francais quebecois…) and could not but could not find the specs for your laptop. Do you have them somewhere? that may help shed some light…

I wish i did. I couldn’t find any specs on it either. Mecer has a laptop with the same model number, so I think it might be that infoclick just slapped their name on it. I couldn’t find any specs for a mecer 755118 either though.

I’ll post a question in the wireless forums in a bit. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum
If you install the program called hwinfo it should give all the details
of your hardware. This can be done via YaST and the software management
or from the CLI (command line interface which is
the console/konsole/xterm program);

sudo zypper in hwinfo

You then need to run from the CLI and send the output to
a file so you can look at it with a text editor (gedit/kate)

sudo hwinfo > hwinfo.txt

You could also send this file to the web for inspection for the forum
members (I suggest you review and remove any sensitive information)

curl -F file=@hwinfo.txt nopaste.com/a

Then post back the URL once it uploads.

There is also a program called smolt (or run smoltGui from the CLI),
this can also be used to send information on your system again, just
post back the URL.

I’ve started a thread in the wireless forum for my wireless issue…

Wheres my wireless? - openSUSE Forums

Thanks, but, umm, what information is sensitive? What should I cut out before posting my hwinfo?

Hi
I don’t think there is generally, but there may be ip address info you
don’t wish to show, BIOS info etc.

Ok, here is a link to my hwinfo…

hwinfo.txt - nopaste.com (beta)

I booted into puppy with my puppy livecd, but it didn’t show any wireless device either. I’m starting to think the guy at the computer store lied to me, and that there is no wireless device in here.

I noticed that there was a problem with my pnpbios from my hwinfo, so I booted with pnpbios=no, but I’ve still got the same problems with the graphics.

Hi
Looks like you may need to go visit the salesperson?

I see it shows your running intel and is set to 3D. Maybe a search of
the forum and google may provide some options to add to the xorg.conf
file to make it perform better?

The trouble seems to be that it isn’t using the modes from xorg.conf at all. None of the higher resolutions are listed as options when I try to change resolutions. I’m thinking that I might try some live cds to see if one of them might generate a better working xorg. I was just hoping that a guru might know what was up, and that I might actually learn something.

Another thing I’d like to add is that when I switch to 800x600, my mouse is bound to the 800x600, and the background picture tiles to 800x600, but the menubar still sits on the bottom, and the screen stays at 1024x768. It is really strange… If someone knows where I can post a screenshot, I’ll do that. It is hard to explain this behaviour, and I’m not sure if I’ve explained it all that well.

Quick Update. I now run wirelessly through a USB D-link Wireless adapter, which is fine for now, but I think I’ll probably break it eventually because I’m notoriously clumsy. I’ve still got problems with the graphics, but that question is better asked in a different forum. Thanks for the help guys. TTFN.
