Hi experts,

I use Opensuse 11.1
i want to create a domain controler to manage Windows and linux clients (almost 5 clients).

What is the best approach with opensuse ?

Thanks in advance.

If you are talking about a Windows NT style domain, you will need to configure
Samba. For general information and setting up a simple workgroup server the
HowTos by swerdna are helpful, and should be read first before trying to
configure your PDC. In particular look at these:
http://opensuse.swerdna.org/suselanprimer.html
http://opensuse.swerdna.org/susesambaserver.html
Additional Information is available in other HowTos at:
http://opensuse.swerdna.org/index.html

Once you have the basics down, the best information for setting up the Domain
is available on Samba.org. In particular I would suggest you read at least
Chapter 3 of “Samba3 by Example” See:
http://samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/secure.html

Although LDAP is often used for large domains, for smaller Domains the tdb
backend is a simpler choice for authentication. With only 5 clients it would
be my recommendation. LDAP is fairly difficult to set up for a novice.

These are the main steps you need to take:

  1. Set up /etc/samba/smb.conf
  2. Open the Samba firewall ports (including broadcasts)
  3. Create users with "smbpasswd -a <username>
    And for a domain:
  4. Map the NT groups to Linux groups

If you run into any problems, please feel free to post back and you should be
able to get more pointed help. In general when asking questions about your
Samba setup it is a good idea to post the contents of /etc/samba/smb.conf
