HELP! SU hangs the system!

Hello people.
I really need help. I just re-booted my server (running openSUSE 11) and now i cant do anything as root.

EG: if i try to open yast it will prompt for the root password. Once entered it hangs. If i close the window i get “Window with title root - KDE su” is not responding"…

or if i try and open the console and then type su, it will prompt for the root password. Once entered it just hangs (allows me to type forever without doing anything).

I’m lost - any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I wouldn’t recommend for any other reason, but can you login as ‘root’
directly from a TTY? Ctrl+Alt+F2 and then try ‘root’ and the
appropriate password. If you get in then that’d be good to know. If
not perhaps you have a login script or something that is causing an
issue. Also now that I reread what you wrote try doing this from a
shell and not just via the GUI in case you are only opening Yast via the
GUI.

Good luck.

Thanks (really!) for the reply.

I’ll try that asap.

I have tried getting root access using different users in KDE but none have worked. I have also tried to log directly onto the shell (i choose the console option from the menu on the login screen) but it just hangs. Or is there another way to get into the shell?

I have a feeling that i have messed up something while messing around trying to set up an ldap server and samba, and then installing vmware server. Then i rebooted and … chaos. Feeling a bit stupid to mess with so much in one session.

you probably need a reinstall
obviously kdesu has a problem keeping your passwd.
root login is not possible even in vt1 by default.
you can try to login user in vt1 and startx
see then if it works.

I pray the re-install isn’t necessary. But if it gets that far, can you recommend a good way to get all the data off?

Starting to panic about data-loss now too.

Use a LiveCD or LiveDVD… SUSE has one, as do most major Linux
distributions. Once you boot into those your hard drive partitions will
be mounted for access and you should have network access (if you ever
did or if you can anyway) and you can then copy things off, burn
CDs/DVDs, etc. On the other hand if you do a reinstall just make sure
you do not format your partitions and your files which are not system
files (probably all located in /home/<yourUserName>) should be left
alone anyway and will be there when you get back in.

Good luck.
