Running 11.2 on and AMDx2 64 bit PC.
Printer is an HP Laserjet 4L
One thing: the printer is connected to the PC through a parallel -> USB converter. Windows can print to it after a lot of tinkering, so it does work. Thing is, Linux detects the printer as connected through the parallel port and I think this is what is keeping me from sending jobs to it. Anything I send to the printer never gets to it.
Is there any way for me to bypass the auto-configuration and install my printer manually? Wouldn’t I still need to use the appropriate driver?
I’m sure lots of people, like myself, read your question. I’d love to be
able to answer it, but I don’t have a clue. I gave away my USB to parrallel
converter cable today as I hadn’t used it in many years. The best I can do
is stumble along with you on the problem and scratch my head too. Can you
connect the printer directly to a parallel port, or is it a new Dell that
doesn’t have those? (Just in case it is, they do offer PCI parallel ports
for purchase.)

It’s a custom built PC. A Biostar AM2 micro ATX board. Doesn’t have a parallel port on it. So I take it, that you think it would be an easier fix to just get a parallel port on a PCI card than to actually mess around with the kernel, scripting, etc.
no surprise there.
I’m just going to forget even trying for now. I dual boot so if I need anything printed I’ll just load up windows.
Can’t say anything about the HP laser since I have a Brother HL-1440 that only has a parallel connection which won’t work with my laptop. My solution was to get an Iogear usb->parallel cable which worked first try.
Does your adapter cable require a special driver (some early ones did).
