Help please with finding a home media server with linux Dolphin or firefox?

I have installed Mediatomb on a HP thin-client running Opensuse13.1, I have my music files on the machines hard disk and it does seem to work well with a Windows 10 laptop. By that I mean I can browse/find the Media server from using Windows explorer as it finds and shows the Mediatomb server and I can play the music via media player etc. So from that I am assuming the setup on the thin-client is fine. The network connection is also on the internal network so all ports and services are open.

I have a desktop PC I use has Opensuse13.2 and the laptop that will boot into Opensuse Leap 42.1.

I have tried to figure out but have top admit defeat, how do I find the same media server that is so easy to find in Windows.

It does not appear under any of the network options, do I have to install something else on Linux to see the unit. I have been browsing with Dolphin and firefox. I can get the Meadiatomb web server but that is is, nothing I can click on to play the music stream with.

Would appreciate your help.

about media not playing post your repo list

zypper lr -d

about a streaming app, personaly I don’t stream but vlc can do that.

Sorry perhaps I have not explained it.

The media server (mediatomb) is installed and working fine on my home network. From a Windows PC on the network I can find the server, pick music files and play them all OK.

But from either of my Linux machines I can not find the server, so wondering if I need to install more software on the client side just to browse and find the media server, is it something to do with upnp?

From the Linux PC’s I can find a samba share (NAS drive) and other Windows shares, but not the media?

I have Kaffine and Amarok which can both receive audio steams from Internet radio stations etc, my issue is finding the home network media server from the likes of dolphin etc.

Just edited to say I do have the codecs etc to play mp3 and avi files on the computers mostly from packman.

that’s more of a networking then a multimedia issue
check and see if the ports you use are open on the opensuse firewall as the default is to refuse all incoming traffic, I’m thinking the firewall is blocking your stream

OK adding a way here.

I found this on a Ubantu forum, I have been searching with opensuse in the term so did not come across this before and it referes to VLC

To use VLC start the Playlist (View -> Playlist; Ctrl + L) and then select Local Network -> Universal Plug ‘n’ Play. However, be advised that VLCs implementation first downloads all the library information before you can select anything. Depending on the size of the library that actually might take several minutes and longer.

So I can use VNC to find the play l;ists/media and then select a music file to play, but can not find the same in Amarok at the moment.

I assume upnp is mainly windows?
