Help please to install sylpheed-3.5.0

I have a new installation of LEAP 42.1 and thought I would try sylpheed rather than T’bird.
I have followed the instructions as far as I can but must have some dependencies missing or incorrect. When I run ./configure I get the following:-

alastair@ibmserver2:~/Downloads/sylpheed-3.5.0> ./configure

The config.log tells me:-

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by configure, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.65. Invocation command line was

configure: exit 1

I have gtk2-devel and gtk3-devel installed.
The INSTALL notes suggest the latest openSUSE with which it works is 11.2.
Could it be my efforts are doomed until sylpheed is updated further?
Budge

Hi
So you don’t have gcc etc installed…

Save the heart ache;
https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?project=GNOME%3AApps&package=sylpheed

I’m not certain, but I think that “claws-mail” is the same thing, or at least a close relative. And it is sitting in the standard repos waiting to be installed.

Totally brilliant. Once more in your debt. Many many thanks. How on earth did you know where to look? Do you use Gnome desktop by any chance?
Thanks again,
Budge

Hi and thanks for the suggestion. I shall look at Claws too but started with sylpheed because of its reported one file per message approach.
Thanks again,
Budge

Hi
What about gcc-c++? Check the actual files down in /usr/bin, they may be softlinked to other versions of gcc? Maybe pkg-config missing.

An easy way to overcome is to export eg (run ./configure --help to see all options as CC may be different);

export CC=/usr/bin/gcc-4.8
export CXX=/usr/bin/g++-4.8
./configure --prefix=/usr (more config options)

Yes, I run GNOME, but I’m a claws-mail user :wink:

Hi Malcolm,
Since you pointed me to repo which worked a treat with no visible missing dependencies I shall not waste time on trying to install the hard way.
Now to demonstrate my total ignorance once more; first I had understood that each message was a different file, my interest being that this would make the system more robust. Seems I am not correct. Must have been another email client. Could that have been Claws or was it a CLI email client? Will look at Claws now. Well here is another problem. Found claws-mail in repo but when I try and install there is a message nothing provides Perl 5.18.2. Since I have perl 5.20 installed ie the up to date version from repo, how should I overcome this obstacle?
Cheers.

Hi
It is for claws mail (as in individual files for messages), there are two folders ~/.claws-mail and a visible folder ‘Local\ Mail’ that I use here, I have both Mail and usenet (nntp) running (gmane to avoid a Mailing list bombardment), plus these and the other Microfocus forums.

That’s a puzzle.

I have claws-mail installed without problem (this is on Leap 42.1). The version tab in Yast shows only one version available, namely 3.12.0-4.1

So I checked perl. The versions tab shows only one version available, namely 5.18.2-3.5.

So it looks to me that you may have picked up perl 5.20 from some additional repo, and that created a conflict. And you probably have something else installed that require perl-5.20, else there would have been an option to downgrade perl to 5.18.2.

OK. My fault. I went back to using the 13.2 machine and there the repo has 5.20. On the LEAP 42.1 machine all is well and Claws is now installed.
Thanks again.
