HELP! opensuse 13.2 kde 5 plasma corrupted triple head config so no desktop

I know this not a tumbleweed issue but it was suggested in the 13.2 forum to ask in here as I am running plasma on 13.2.

My problem is that I accidentally activated the 3rd head on my nvidia gtx 780ti for a user, let’s call him Blatter, and shut the system down whilst in that state. Now when I boot the system and login as Blatter I find that the plasma desktop is just one huge black nothing, in essence Blatter has become corrupted >:(

There does still seem to be desktop functionality in the blackness because I can click anywhere in the blackness and type konsole, then moving my cursor around the screen it suddenly turns in to the text cursor, so I can the use the bash cli to shut the system down, etc. Similarly I can click on the blackness, type logout, hit return twice and I am back to the X login screen.

I said I did this accidentally because I did it once before and had to reload the whole dam system because I could not solve the problem and vowed never to activate the 3rd head again.

This time i have investigated further and found it to be a definite plasma only problem local to a user account, i.e. only Blatter is corrupt, all the other users in gnome, plasma, etc are not affected. Similarly Blatter is only corrupt in plasma, it seems under gnome and lxfce he is fine.

I have now after an endless cycle of backup/delete something/reboot/restore madness, isolated the problem down to a 2nd file in the ~/.local/share/kscreen directory. I deleted the one with the later timestamp and then rebooted the system and can now login as Blatter to a working plasma desktop. It is not ideal as this has somehow managed to remove my desktop settings such as wallpaper, screen layout, etc. I am not therefore confident that I have fully resolved the problem. I confirmed it was that file by restoring it, deleting the other and rebooting to a once again absent plasma desktop.

This system has never had kde4 on it, so there should be no clash between the kde versions. Also it was working fine till I turned on the 3rd head.

Does anyone know if there is anything else I can do to workaround this situation should I accidentally turn on the 3rd head again and/or how to better recover from this current episode?

I’d like to report this bug upstream but not sure I know enough to report it accurately yet.
